Great Sorors!
Sorors,
I thought I would start a "Praise a Soror" thread.
What Soror do you know in your area that you think of in the highest regard?
I'll start with the Dr. Shirley Mitchell, a retired DC Public School Principal. She was my inspiration and an influence in becoming a Sigma.

A good example
Annie Howard, our soRHOr in my grad chapter. She is 82 years old, drives herself to chapter meetings and is very active. She always makes an effort to support and attend chapter events, and attend the Regionals and Boule's. To me, she is an excellent example of having that 'Good 'ol Sigma spirit'.

singin' the praises right now!
the soror i most admire is SoRHOr LUELLA JOHNSON of the eta phi sigma chapter of gainesville, florida. she has been such a role model, motivator, mentor, sister, and so much more to me since i crossed at U. of Florida fall 2000. whenever i wanted to give up because i felt things were just too much to handle--personally and as far as the sorority is concerned-- she always was there to push me on and encouraged me to see all the great things that i could do instead of focusing on my limitations. her enthusiasm is contagious and represents SIGMA to the fullest. she has never been too busy for me and and has always been my listening ear. even though she pledged in 1952, she stays current on EVERYTHING and there is NOTHING that i can't talk to her about. she has provided me with tons of guidance and whenever i left her house after one of our 5 hour conversations, i almost got tears in my eyes thinking about how much she has meant to me over the past 3 years. from my first interview in the process of seeking membership in SIGMA to the day i packed up my things and moved back home to start my new life after college, she has always made me feel as if there were something special about me and that i am capable of handling what life throws my way. she has played the true part of a sister so much so that when i was preparing to move back to miami, i could not bring myself to go to her house to say goodbye because i knew that i would cry so much. i love luella johnson with all my heart and as a new grad soror, i know i have to make her proud because she is one of my major SIGMA inspirations. she never let me quit, she always made me stick to it, and she's always been my buddy. when i go back to gainesville for the big UF/FAMU match-up this weekend, you know who i'll be stopping by to see! big up to LUELLA JOHNSON!

I have a couple...
One of the sorors I hold in highest regard are Soror Sadie Ludley, who is a member of Gamma Kappa Sigma, the Grambling graduate chapter. She has always been supportive to the undergraduates, and is always forthcoming with the truth, even though we did not always want to hear it as undergrads. She has been active for almost 45 years in Sigma, and is still lookin' good .
Another that I really look up to is Mabel Cutliff, who is a charter and member of the Minden, LA Alumnae chapter. I don't know Soror Cutliff well, but she was one of my mother's schoolteachers, and a major role model in her life. She is a brilliant woman who works hard for Sigma and the community. She had such a positive impact on my mother that when I discussed my interest in Sigma with her, she was almost more enthusiastic than me .
There are so many more that I have met through the years, but these two stick out the most because Soror Cutliff's example was a main reason I became a Sigma, and Soror Ludley's commitment was instrumental in me knowing what Sigma Gamma Rho was really about.

Mentor Mary P. Dougherty dies
From The Washington Post - Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003
Mary Pearl Dougherty, 88, a retired Foreign Service secretary who for decades was an unofficial counselor and mentor to young black Foreign Service officers, died of cancer Nov. 13 at the Methodist Home in Washington.
Ms. Dougherty retired from the Foreign Service in 1974 after 30 years, during which her postings included Liberia, South Vietnam, the Central African Republic, Zaire, France, Germany, and Romania.
In these posts, she sought out young black officers, many of whom were overseas for the first time, took them under her wing and offered advice and counsel on a variety of official and unofficial matters.
Harriet L. Elam-Thomas, a career Foreign Service officer who in 1999 was named ambassador to Senegal, said Ms. Dougherty was a friend and mentor for 40 years, beginning in the 1960s in Paris. Her counsel ranged from advice on how to deal with being homesick over the Christmas holidays to the right glasses for serving cognac at dinner parties, Elam-Thomas said.
Ms. Dougherty was born in Alabama and came to the Washington area in the 1930s. She studied psychology at American University.
She was a secretary to Carter G. Woodson, worked in the War Department and later for the Scott and Pinkett real estate firms. In 1977, as a consultant to the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Ms. Dougherty coordinated and led a delegation to Senegal, the Gambia, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, and Malawi.
She was a vice president of the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA, president of the African American Women's Association and a founding member of the Thursday Luncheon Group at the State Department.

Class Notes from the Denison University Magazine (Summer 2003)
Tina Marie Andrews '05
Tina Marie Andrews came to Denison from Chicago's South Side. Growing up there, she says, taught her to be grateful for everything she has. In addition to her many accomplishments, Tina Marie takes pride that she will be the first in her family to graduate from college.
As a high school student at Chicago Vocational Career Academy, she enrolled in a program with Trinity Hospital that alllowed her to earn a licensed practical nursing degree. Her love of nursing carried over to Denison, where she studies Pre-Nursing and Communication.
Tina Marie is active in the Black Student Union, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, Project READ, and the Office of First Year Students. She has been a member of Residential Life staff (both during the school year and summer) and she has worked in the library and Black Studies office. During breaks from Denison, Tina Marie works in nursing homes in Chicago. Tina Marie's career plans are to be a nurse practitioner specializing in gerontology. She is currently studying abroad in Ghana.

Third, I want a pretty poodle hair toss to my chapter Iota Nu Sigma of Worthington, OH I am so honored to be in this chapter. We are about to blow up and be the illest chapter anyone has ever seen. Can't wait.
I would go up to seven for our founders but I don't have that many shout outs. So Sigma Love and Sigma respect for all the pretty poodle ladies of THE ONLY SIGMA GAMMA RHO!!!!!!!!

Sorhors,
There are several sorhors that I truly admire as mentors:
Sorhor Annette Cornish from Alpha Nu Sigma and advisor to the Theta Omicron Chapter @ the University of Delaware. I mean everyone that meets or comes into contact with Sorhor Cornish calls her Sorhor Cornish. I'm even talking about men and folks from all different walks of life. She will always be known as Sorhor Cornish -Mother-to-all!
International Grand Basileus Sorhor Dr. Mynora J. Bryant because she was my Syntakti as an undergraduate soror (Spr. 83') who was always and still is there for me.
Sorhor Deborah Walsh is more like my big sister or second mom and will give you the shirt of her back if you need it.
My best friend Sorhor Susan "Joy" Pitts - that is my girl! Words cannot describe such a kind, trustworthy, consistent, prayer warrior, my "I'm a make you laugh" buddy, and the list is just to long.
