Athens --- Nearly one-third of a University of Georgia fraternity pledge class was charged with underage drinking on a recent trip in Tennessee.
Ten men were arrested at a Shell gas station in Loudon, Tenn., on Oct. 12. The 34-member Sigma Chi pledge class was traveling to visit another chapter in Miami, Ohio.
The students are to appear in a Loudon court Dec. 19.
Drew Moore, a senior from Atlanta and the president of Sigma Chi, said the trip is a chapter tradition.
''It's not required,'' he said. ''But everyone goes, and it's a lot of fun, so no one wants to miss it.''
Claudia Shamp, university coordinator for Greek Life, said the chapter may face school sanctions.
''The fraternity has been extremely cooperative, and we're going to wait until the legal issues are worked out and then decide if we need to take some kind of action,'' Shamp said.
