Fresno State (CA) FIJI Found Dead

The San Jose Mercury News web site is carrying an Associated Press story about a 19-year-old member of FIJI who was found dead at the fraternity's house. There's a short statement by a Fresno State administrator. The yooung man's name has not yet been released. Alcohol may have been a factor in his death.

My thoughts are with the man's family and friends.

(Station KFSN has a shorter version of the story on its web site, too.)

Not trying or qualified to make a diagnosis from afar, the article I read in Fraternal News certainly sounds like this unfortunate young man had a problem.

He allegedly showed a lot of signs including grades, heaving drinking, etc. He was aparantely not in any classes or officially registered for school.

Again, from the article I read, it appears that at least one of his Fiji brothers was concerned and had talked to him about his drinking -- but it didn't help, I guess.

It's really tragic that we hear of these things so often.

The toxicology reports showed a blood alcohol level of 0.34 and the coroner has ruled Mr. Daniel's death accidental, due to acute alcohol toxicity, according to a January 11 story on station KFSN's site:

Ban upheld

The 5-year ban of FIJI at Fresno State has been upheld. The chapter's appeal of the ban was denied. However, there apparently is the possibility that the chapter could return in 4 years if certain conditions are met (no word on what those conditions might be).

Excertpts from article:
The family of a student who died at a fraternity house after a weekend of drinking sued California State University, Fresno, and the fraternity for wrongful death.

Danny Ray Daniels, 19, was found dead in his bed at the Phi Gamma Delta house last year. He had a blood-alcohol level four times the legal limit . . . .
