Will any of you be attending Mardi Gras this year? The 2004 Carnival season began on yesterday (1/6)...Mardi Gras Day is 2/24. More info can be found at Mardi Gras

I will be attending some deb parties and some Mardi Gras Balls for the 2004 Season. I am sure I'll take off and go home for Mardi Gras. Oh and my parents are having a king cake sent to my office next week! MMMMM! Gotta love a good king cake from a good bakery like Randazzo's.I always enjoy going home to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras and attend Mardi Gras Balls

NO king cake compares to the ones from McKenzie's!!! I miss McKenzie's....*sigh*
Anyway, I will DEFINITELY be at the Zulu ball this year! My cousin is a maid this year. It takes me back to '97 when I came out... *sigh* I haven't found out who the entertainment is, but I hope that it is Frankie. HAIL ZULU!!!

just curious...
If one were thinking about going to Mardi Gras, what are the optimum dates to go? 2/20-2/25?

When I went we went the weekend preceeding Fat Tuesday. So around the time you have listed is good. I've done Mardi Gras once, I have some wild memories. But I don't think I could ever do that party again. The next time I visit New Orleans, it will be for a nice relaxed weekend. AKA2D, is there a such thing as a relaxing weekend in NO?

I wish NO was in driving distance, cuz airfare is ridamndiculous!!! I've never went, but after visiting NO, I just have to see it once. I think the weekend I spent down there was pretty relaxing.
having flashbacks of the prom couples in Shoney's...

Yes, there is such a thing.
Mine will begin THIS evening.

Here are a few of the big parades:
2/21- Endymion (4:30) Mid-city
2/22- Bacchus (5:30) Uptown
2/23- Orpheus (5:45) Uptown
2/24- Zulu (8:00 AM) Uptown
Remember you don’t always have to be on time or actually witness each parade to have a good time!!

CHAKA KHAN will be performing at the ZULU Ball!!!
And P.S. to Nupe4Life: They are beignets from Cafe du Monde.
P.S. to Ideal: If you are coming, EVERYONE should experience Zulu at least once in their lifetime. It rolls on the 24th. It is an all Black parade and a straight up party! The only setback is that it is downright ghetto!!! Zulu has been known to have 1-2 hour gaps between floats! Some clown always finds a way to get ran over by a float on their quest for a coconut. I once saw a man get ran over in front of me. The whole time the people were trying to extract him, he NEVER let go of his bag. It's not that serious....

After the recent events that just took place at the parade on St. Charles Ave, are you all still going to attend the parades?

Heck...I was on St. Charles last night for a parade.
WHEN HAS SOMETHING LIKE THIS EVER STOPPED ANYTHING IN NEW ORLEANS?
Same events...ONLY during a parade.
It could have been a concert, football game, going to the mall, movies, etc.

Really though. I'm gonna be in my usually spots. I always stand by the cops. It's less likely that some foolishness pops off around them. I'm surprised that the shooting happened where a lot of police were located. I was on Canal for Saturn and Muses and G.W. Carver was heading our way. We saw the police hopping barracades and everything, so we turned around. We looked back and there had to be about 50-60 kids in a mob walking the neutral ground, following the marching units. The police stood their ground and pulled their clubs. Those children turned and ran back where they came from. I encouraged the crowd to clap for the police when they came back to their spot. I had to thank them for helping to avoid some foolishness. I feel safe with NOPD and I will be out tomorrow for Endymion and ZULU on Tuesday if it doesn't rain. I may pass at NOMTOC.

Maybe so.
The ball was REALLY nice. I had a grand time. Chaka Khan didn't sing "Through the Fire" and I was about to click. How dare she?! Otherwise, her performance was good. I was to see Frankie again. That's who they need to get back for next year.
