The late Grand Basileus (National President) Harry Penn, a dentist and civic activist in Roanoke, VA, in the late 1950s, toured the Deep South to ascertain white's viewpoints on integration and race relations. Because of his phenotype, he could "pass" as a white man. During this time he traveled, slept, and ate in white establishments. He represented himself as a sociology professor at a Virginia college as a means of engaging in conversations with whites about integration and civil rights.
