Sigma Alpha Epsilon Loses Brother

This is a bit late, but I thought I would post it. Especially sad since SAE has lost 3 brothers in the past several years. Also because Westminster is a major feeder school for Washington and Lee. Below is the message from our University President.

To the W&L Community,

It is with tremendous sadness that I bring you the news that Cullum
Owings '03 was killed in a car accident yesterday evening while
traveling back from Atlanta to W&L from his Thanksgiving holiday.
Cullum's brother Pierce '06 was also in the accident and was treated
at the hospital and released.

Though we don't have all of the details, it appears that the car that
Cullum and Pierce were driving was hit by a tractor-trailer on
Interstate 81 near exit 181 just south of Lexington. Cullum was
driving the vehicle.

Cullum was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and a graduate of
Westminster Schools. The Owings family resides in Atlanta. For anyone
wishing to contact them, their address is 1309 Bohler Court, Atlanta,
GA 30327.

Funeral services are expected to be this weekend. The University is
organizing a bus for those wanting to attend. Additional details will
follow. The family has asked that students not drive to the funeral.

Please know that counseling is available and anyone who would like to
speak with a counselor should call x8590.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Pierce and the Owings family and
to all of Cullum's many friends during this very difficult time.

Tom Burish
President
