Police are looking into whether hazing played a role in the death of a Dartmouth College student whose body was found in a river over the weekend.
Won Jang, a member of the class of 2026, was reported missing Sunday afternoon after last being seen at a social gathering the night before, at docks near the Connecticut River. Police searched the area with the help of a dive team, fish and game officers, and marine patrol. Several hours later, they found Jang's body in the river approximately 65 feet offshore, according to a media release from the Hanover Police Department in New Hampshire.

I read that both these chapters were coming off University probation in the Fall of 2023 for risk management issues. Sadly, they apparently didn’t learn much…

Update on this tragic death.

A Dartmouth College sorority and two members of a fraternity were charged in connection with the drowning death of Won Jang, whose body was found over the summer in the Connecticut River following an off-campus party, police said.
New Hampshire police found probable cause to charge Matthew Catrambone and Samuel Terry with one misdemeanor each for providing alcohol to a person under 21 years of age, the Hanover Police Department said in a news release on Friday. They are both members of the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity, the same one Jang belonged to.

The Alpha Phi sorority as a corporation was charged with one misdemeanor violation of facilitating an underage alcohol house. Police said sorority members hosted the July 6 party and members of the fraternity who were over 21 purchased and supplied alcohol.
The fraternity and sorority were immediately suspended after Jang’s death. These suspensions remain in effect pending the results of the school’s ongoing internal investigation, Dartmouth said in a statement.
Due to federal law, the school said it could not comment on individual student disciplinary matters.

Another news story said neither Beta Alpha Omega nor Alpha Phi Headquarters had made statements. In these cases don’t the National Organizations normally immediately step in and shut down operations?

I would imagine huge lawsuits are coming…

Beta Alpha Omega is a local that is a descendant of Beta Theta Pi. I imagine they have an alumni board.

And as a note because there are a *lot* of Dartmouth locals that are former chapters of Nationals, Beta Alpha Omega comes from a Beta Theta Pi chapter (Alpha Omega chapter) that was closed by National in 1996 for violation of policies and was recognized in 2008 (after years underground) as Beta Alpha Omega.
