Cool Harry Potter and the Sorority Recruitment!

Hi guys! This is my first time ever posting on Greek Chat so please bear with me! But, over the weekend I got addicted to reading recruitment stories so I decided that I wanted to share my own! My memory is a bit hazy about the experience and I wish now that I had wrote it all down, but I will give you everything that I remember! I'll also post it throughout this week instead of all at once, so look for updates! Also, I chose a Harry Potter theme because I am a Harry Potter nerd! I'm sure it has been done before, so I hope no one minds me using it again. :x

How recruitment works at my school is that it is spread over two weekends during the spring semester! The first weekend consists of attending parties for each sorority, with the first day being a twenty minute party and the next being a thirty minute philanthropy oriented party. The next weekend consisted of invite parties, the first of which was 45 minutes long and the next being Preference Night that consisted of hour long parties! The following Monday after the second weekend was then bid day!

I decided to go through recruitment about halfway through my first semester of my second year of school! I don't really know why I did not go through my freshmen year, I just don't even remember thinking about it. But somewhere along the way I became obsessed with the idea of being in a sorority. Maybe it was because all of my friends were guys and I was really missing that female connection, or maybe it was because my cousin went through recruitment at her school and absolutely loved her sorority, and since we are so similar, I figured I would too! But, it doesn't really matter. What does matter is that I was beyond excited for formal recruitment to start in the spring, and made sure to sign up as soon as possible! (My school only does sorority recruitment in the spring, so I had to wait!) My school consists of 5 NPC sororities, one local sorority that has been around for a very long time, and one sorority that is supposedly for female engineers but is also a social sorority that anyone can join? I don't know! That one always confused me, but it was there and a part of formal recruitment so I think it is worth mentioning!

Now, in no particular order, I will be referring to each of the sororities as follows:

Harry Potter
Ron Weasley
Hermione Granger
Draco Malfoy
Severus Snape
Luna Lovegood
Neville Longbottom

I will post my story from the first weekend tomorrow evening! Hope you guys are interested in hearing my story!

Love your theme! Draco Malfoy all the way! But I can certainly root for Hermione, Snape, and Neville, too. My four favorite characters in the entire series. I can't wait to hear your story!

The first weekend!

Decided to post a little earlier than I initially planned! Sorry it's so long. If any of you are interested in my story but don't want to read this much, let me know! I can put up a spark notes version later!

---

I was incredibly excited for recruitment to begin! I had even managed to pick out all of my outfits within the weeks before because I was beyond excited for recruitment to start. I felt somewhat weird going through as a sophomore, but one of my few female friends who is in a sorority told me that there are always a handful of upperclassmen that go through at my school, which helped to relieve my stress over it. I was going into recruitment without really knowing anyone else who was and only having one good friend who was involved in greek life, so it really did seem strange. But I wanted it more than anything, so I put all of my worries aside and went in with a good attitude!

The first morning of recruitment I attempted to get up with enough time to get ready and walk to our student center where recruitment is held (all of the sororities have some sort of housing, but they are incredibly spread around campus so it is impractical to make us walk from one to another. it would take forever!). But, as usual for me, I forgot how long it took to walk from the sophomore housing to the student center and ended up being in a rush to get there! As I was power walking over to the student center, there was really only one other girl on the sidewalk headed in the same direction! All of the freshmen live on the opposite side of campus, so there were not any girls walking to recruitment from where I was coming from. But this girl stopped me and asked if I was going to sorority recruitment because she was too! I told her yes and she explained to me that she had just transferred to my school and figured joining a sorority was the best way to get involved and to get to know people! We chatted the whole way to the student center where we eventually had to split up to get assigned to our different Rho Gamma groups! But I was excited that I had already made a new friend, whom I still see and say hello to on a regular basis.

Once in our Rho Gamma groups we all introduced ourselves and decorated our individual nametags! There were about 8 other girls in the group with me and there was definitely a strong mixture of personalities! I chatted with a few girls, two of them were actually sophomores, until we got our schedule for the day. Since I went through recruitment last spring, I honestly don't remember the order in which I attended the parties, but I will tell you what I thought of each of them. I wanted to go into recruitment with an open mind, and I tried my best to, but being a sophomore it was hard to push away the stereotypes I had heard about each of the sororities. Every party I went into, I had to remind myself to erase everything I'd heard before from my mind! Also, because my memory is foul I am going to mush my opinions from party one and party two into one! I can't really differentiate between them anymore, and we had to go to all of them anyways so I think my opinion didn't change too much between the first two days.

So, let's begin! Party One&Two:

Draco Malfoy - This was the sorority that my best girl friend was in, but also a girl who I had had serious problems and a falling out with my freshman year (boy drama :x), so I had mixed feelings initially. Luckily the girl I had a problem with could not make it to the first weekend of recruitment, so I knew I had avoided her at least for the first two parties! I was paired with another PNM (I'll call her the Sorcerer's Stone!) when going in, as I was in most other situations because there was a record breaking number of PNMs that year, and luckily she was one person that I ended up becoming great friends with throughout my recruitment experience. Overall, I talked with some nice, sweet, and friendly girls in Draco Malfoy. They seemed to have a good sisterhood and an interesting philanthropy. As I said they were all really sweet but they didn't seem to have much personality to them. They were very laid back, a little plain, and just generally nice girls. I thought they were okay and that I could probably see myself as a part of their sisterhood, but I was still uncertain if it was really where I fit in.

Severus Snape - This was the group that I had unintentionally ranked as my top before I even went into recruitment. Dumb idea, I know. But from what I had heard before I had felt it was the place where I was most likely to fit in. The first day I remember talking to a girl and the conversation being fine, but nothing special. I also remember talking to another girl who I thought was awkward and we had a rough time keeping up a conversation. On the second day I was paired with the Sorcerer's Stone again, and we were talking to a girl that she had talked to before, so they carried on more of a conversation than I did and I felt a little out of place. Overall, I was disappointed with Severus Snape. I thought it was going to be more than it was and I honestly thought I would just click with the girls but I didn't. I decided that I still wouldn't mind being a part of this group, and hoped I got invited back the next weekend to see if it was different.

Neville Longbottom- This is the one chapter on our campus that has consistently been struggling with numbers, but I tried my best to go in with an open mind. This was the only party on the first weekend where we got to sit down and I remember being really grateful for that! But we sat in groups with about five other PNMs and one sorority member because they had so few so it was a little strange. Overall, the conversation was very awkward because no one seemed to want to talk to them. I felt like that was rude so I did my best to keep the conversation going. It mostly strayed towards academics and classes so it was hard to learn much else about the girls. I mentioned how much I liked their house, because I thought it was the prettiest one on campus, but they didn't really have much to say about that. On the second day we got to pack little bags of snacks for their philanthropy and we were no longer in a big group. This was basically torture because there were gummy bears and we were all starving! I talked to one of the girls I did before and she was nice, but we didn't have much in common. The other PNM I was paired with and I seemed to talk more than the girl in Neville Longbottom! She was sweet, but overall I could not see myself in Neville Longbottom. The girls, although nice, were just very opposite than me and I wanted more out of a sorority than I felt the Neville Longbottoms were giving.

Hermione Granger- For some reason I don't remember much about the first two parties for Hermione Granger, but I remember liking them and thinking that I wouldn't mind being a part of their group. Supposedly, this is considered one of the "top" sororities at my school. They do have the highest overall GPA and seemed to be very involved, but I tried to push these pre-conceived rankings out of my mind. The first day I talked to a girl in my grade that I had met before move-in and she was so excited that I was doing recruitment that she couldn't stop gushing about it! Of course, this made me excited and really put me in a better mood! I was glad that people were happy I was going through recruitment even though I was a sophomore! The PNM that I was paired with during this round really frustrated me though! She kept directing the conversation towards herself and talking about how she thought it was a great opportunity for networking and talking about all of the philanthropies that she had been involved in, and it really made me feel like I had not done enough to deserve a spot in this group! I left feeling nervous about the situation, but the next day I felt better because I was on my own and both of the girls I talked to were really sweet. The one used to live on my floor my freshman year and even though I didn't know her, she was very welcoming. The girls put on a skit on the second day and I remember it being hilarious! All of the girls loved it. After the second day I was really happy with Hermione Granger and hoping I would be invited back next week so I could really learn more about their sisterhood. I felt like I had really got along with all of the girls I spoke to. But I couldn't tell if that was because they were all so sweet, or because we really clicked!

Ron Weasley - This sorority was one that a lot of the girls were talking poorly about and that really bothered me. Personally, I think it's fine if you didn't feel like you got along with the people you talked with or if you had some awkward silences. But I don't think that justifies talking poorly about the group or joking about skipping their parties. I tried to ignore all of the other girls and go in with an open mind. I had a lot of acquaintances in this group that I thought were really nice, so I didn't see what all of these girls' problems were! I was paired with the Sorcerer's Stone once again, which was a relief, and we just chit-chatted with a couple girls. Unfortunately, keeping up a conversation was incredibly difficult. The Sorcerer's Stone and I just didn't seem to have anything in common with these girls! I kept trying to jump start a conversation but they never seemed to go anywhere. I remember the next day we did a craft for their philanthropy and it took like, two seconds. Then we were forced into more awkward conversations. I was confused. The girls I knew in this sorority were really nice and personable, but everyone I was talking to was so awkward! I just didn't understand it. I left their parties feeling confused but I overall decided I couldn't see myself in Ron Weasley. They weren't offering the things I wanted to get from a sorority, and I just hadn't clicked with anyone yet! I also think this was my last party of the day on the first day, so I was pretty exhausted!

Luna Lovegood - I went in not knowing much about this group. One of the girls I talked to used to live on my floor my freshman year again and we kept up a good conversation! She was really nice and I remember really liking this groups symbol, plus they had super cute t-shirts on! But, once again I was paired with the conversation hog girl and I felt like I never got a word in. She just made me feel uncomfortable. I was really starting to not like her! The next day I was with a really nice girl who shared my name but we were paired with a very intimidating Luna Lovegood. The conversation seemed okay but she just seemed really not interested in us at all. I would ask her something and she would be looking around the room and not at us. Then she would just give us a pretty bland answer. I couldn't understand why she didn't want to have a conversation with us! Luckily, they then showed a video about their group and it was pretty cute. It looked like the Luna Lovegoods had a pretty decent sisterhood. I couldn't really tell how I felt about them yet. I felt like they weren't that involved on campus because I never really heard about their events. I figured if I got invited back next weekend, I could make a better judgment!

Harry Potter - I remember being very nervous for this first party for some reason. The room we were placed in on the first day was incredibly small and Harry Potter was a very large group. So, it was really hard to hear over all of the other conversations going on in the room. The first girl I was paired with was really nice and we had a good conversation at first. Unfortunately, after awhile we were struggling with things to talk about and it was making me really nervous. I wanted to like this group and I was upset I couldn’t carry on a conversation with this girl. Luckily, I was then bumped over to someone else. Yet another girl who lived on my floor freshman year! We hit it off right away and talked about what life was like our freshman year and about how crazy my roommate was! After the party I felt sort of bad for talking about that, but she brought it up not me! She also mentioned the group of guys I was friends with and asked me if I was still friends with them. I couldn’t tell if that was a good thing either. :/ I definitely wanted to make a better impression the second day cause even though I liked this group, I felt the first day hadn’t gone as I had hoped. The second day ended up being INCREDIBLE. The first girl I talked to I got along with great and we talked all about how much we like clothes and how they got to get super dressed up for their yearly philanthropy event! She made an effort to introduce me to her other sisters and got me a seat right in the front before they put on their skit! And boy, let me tell you, I thought it was awesome! They showcased all of the different things their sisters were involved in and there was a lot of dancing and music, and it was all so funny! I left their second party basically in awe, feeling like Harry Potter was the place for me. I couldn’t have been happier!

After the day was over, the Sorcerer’s Stone and I talked about which groups we liked best. I mentioned how amazing I thought Harry Potter was and she agreed! We both loved them! There were other groups we liked as well though.

Overall, by the end of the first weekend, I ended up ranking something like this.

1. Harry Potter
2. Hermione Granger
3. Severus Snape
4. Draco Malfoy
5. Luna Lovegood
6. Ron Weasley
7. Neville Longbottom

I would have been happy with being invited back to any of my top five! But I was pretty certain I did not fit with my last two.

The short version for all of those who don't care about my blabbering and excessive details.

Draco Malfoy - Nice, sweet girls. A little bland but overall had good conversations and got along well with those talked to. Had an interesting philanthropy. Best friend is a Draco Malfoy as well as someone who I had a serious falling out with. Mixed feelings about this one. Could see myself here, but unsure yet.

Severus Snape - Made the mistake of making them my "top pick" before recruitment even began. Was very disappointed after the first two parties. Had awkward conversations and was double rushed often, with the other PNM taking over. Desperately wanted to give them another chance, but not as excited about them as I was before.

Neville Longbottom - A group consistently struggling with numbers but tried to be as friendly as possible even though I was not interested. Did not offer the same social aspects as the rest of the sororities. Conversations were in groups of about 5 PNMs and strayed strongly towards academics. Nice girls, but not for me.

Hermione Granger- Considered the "top" sorority at my school. They have highest GPA and overall great campus involvement. All of the girls were incredibly sweet and I had wonderful conversations with everyone I spoke to. Had an amazing skit and was really hoping to be invited back to this group the next weekend. Honestly had not expected to like them as much as I did.

Ron Weasley- Had many acquaintances in this group before going through recruitment, all of which seemed like great people. Disappointed that everyone I spoke to during recruitment though was awkward and could not keep up a conversation with me. Confused as to how this could have happened. Also, did not offer the aspects that I was looking for in a sorority, so ultimately decided they were not for me.

Luna Lovegood - Did not know much about this group. Overall had some good conversations and some awkward ones. Didn't hear a lot about campus involvement, which was disappointing. After the two parties, still felt like I hadn't learned much about them! Wouldn't mind coming back to find out more.

Harry Potter - A huge fan of this group. Had wonderful conversations with some wonderful girls. Struggled a bit the first day but was in absolute awe after the second. Convinced that Harry Potter was the house for me after the first weekend.

My rankings for the first two parties:
1. Harry Potter
2. Hermione Granger
3. Severus Snape
4. Draco Malfoy
5. Luna Lovegood
6. Ron Weasley
7. Neville Longbottom

Will post about the 3rd party (invite party) Wednesday afternoon!

3rd party!

The first day of our second weekend consisted of invite-only parties! So as I’m sure you can imagine I was incredibly nervous to see which groups I was invited back to! During the week my Rho Gamma had called to tell me when to be there on Saturday and I made sure to write the time down. But as I was getting ready that morning I received a call…it was my Rho Gamma asking me where I was! I told her that I thought my party didn’t start for another hour and she told me that it was starting in ten minutes! I was so confused! Luckily, I was finished getting ready, cancelled on breakfast with my boyfriend, and hurried out of my dorm. On the way I checked the voicemail she left me to see if I had written the time down wrong, but I hadn’t. She had just told me the wrong time! Safe to say, I was pretty upset.

Once I got to the student center I ran up to where my party was. My Rho Gamma gave me my schedule and quietly ushered me inside since everyone was already in. The party I was late to was Draco Malfoy. I felt so bad for being late, but it wasn’t even my fault. Luckily, the girl I was paired with was really nice and understanding. And it definitely gave us something to talk about! We had a good conversation, but the party seemed to end so soon. Maybe because I was late! So I left feeling a little disappointed and like I didn’t experience Draco Malfoy the way I had wanted to.

After this party I checked my schedule and I was thrilled to see that I was invited back to both Harry Potter and Hermione Granger! My top two! In addition to that, I was also invited back to Draco Malfoy (which I had just attended) and Ron Weasley. I was a little disappointed about not being invited back to Severus Snape. I had really wanted to learn more about them! But, I decided to get rid of that thought and just be glad I had gotten invites to the ones I had loved! I know some girls did not and I felt so bad for them. The Sorcerer’s Stone told me when I saw her later that she had gotten invited back to Harry Potter as well, and we were both incredibly excited! I was just incredibly thankful that it hadn’t been Harry Potter that I was late to!

Next up was Ron Weasley! I was honestly surprised that I had been invited back here. I hadn’t had any good conversations with these girls, so I wondered what had prompted them to invite me back! But I went in and they served some really tasty drinks so I thought it could be a better experience. But once again the girl I talked to could not keep up a conversation with me. I swear, she asked me the same question three times and all I could do was give a nervous giggle every time there was an awkward silence. I was thankful when one of the girls stood up to talk about their sorority, but there was nowhere for me to sit, which made it even more uncomfortable. I was just happy that it helped to pass the time. It was the longest forty minutes of my life and I was grateful to get out there!

Next up was Harry Potter and I couldn’t have been more excited! This party was being held on the stage in one of the rooms in our student center and the curtains were drawn closed so we had no idea what was going to happen. The Sorcerer’s Stone and I waited in line with all of the other girls and we could barely contain our excitement. We were walked up the stairs individually and led to the back of the stage where we were then announced by name into the area where all the girls were. A girl came up to us and led us to our seats that had a nametag on them for each of us. The room was decorated beautifully! There were paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling and the lights were dimmed. On the tables were virgin strawberry daiquiris and chocolate covered strawberries. It all just looked so beautiful. Once everyone was announced the conversation started. The girl I was talking to kept up a conversation most of the time but it kind of pittered out halfway through. To be honest, I didn’t really like her, I felt like she was kind of rude and stuck up. Luckily, towards the end they showed a slideshow of their sisterhood and all of the things they did together. It only made me want to be a Harry Potter even more! Even though I felt I didn’t have a good rusher, I still wanted to be a Harry Potter. I was just nervous that they would think differently of me now because of this one slightly bad experience.

My final party that day was Hermione Granger! I was tired but had really been looking forward to this party. We were announced by name again and seated at tables. They had a lot of cute finger foods for us. There was angel food cake and chocolate covered fruit and it was all homemade! I managed to eat some of it but my rusher and I were having such a good conversation that I didn’t really even have time. She was very sweet and I really liked talking to her. They showed a slideshow/video about their sisterhood as well. It was really great, these girls really seemed to love each other. One of the girls who was studying abroad had sent a video and talked about how excited she was for all of us going through recruitment and how much Hermione Granger meant to her. The video was very sweet and they showed clips from Greek Week where the girls were doing a rope crawl and it was so FAST. My rusher told me everyone would ask them if it was sped up, but it wasn’t, they just take greek week very seriously! I left liking Hermione Granger more than I had before. I could definitely see myself there.

At the end of the day I was exhausted, but knew my rankings. They were:
1. Harry Potter
2. Hermione Granger
3. Draco Malfoy
4. Ron Weasley

I really hoped to be invited back to Preference for my top two, but I would have been okay with my number three as well!

Look for an update tomorrow evening.

What a shame that the Rho Gamma got your start time wrong. It sounds like you handled it well.

Waiting with baited breath!

Okay, since Severus Snape is gone, I will now choose Hermione Granger since she is my favorite in the 4 you have left to attend.

Preference!

My Rho Gamma called me late on Saturday night to tell me what time to arrive the next day, so I knew I had been invited back to at least one party! I was so nervous to find out who, but I somehow made it to sleep then headed over there the next day. When my Rho Gamma handed me my schedule I was relieved to see both Harry Potter and Hermione Granger on my list! I had not been invited back to Draco Malfoy, which I blamed on my being late, but I didn’t mind too much. But, there was another party on my list…it was Ron Weasley. I was so confused! What did these girls see in our awkward conversations?! I just shoved it aside and headed to my first party. Which happened to be,

Ron Weasley: I was at least excited to see how the preference rounds went. I was very confident. I loved my dress and my shoes and felt I was really showing my personality. We were announced one by one to the girls in Ron Weasley and someone handed us a flower and led us to the outside of the room. I felt like I was being treated like a princess! The girls were singing a pretty song and one of the seniors read a letter about what Ron Weasley had meant to her. She started crying and I thought it was sweet but it was a little strange too. Maybe I’m just uncomfortable with people crying. Once this was all over, I couldn’t hold a conversation with my rusher yet again! And this time I managed to spill my drink, even more awkward! It was so uncomfortable. They did a good job with their preference party but I knew this was not the house for me.

Next up was Harry Potter: Words could not even express how much I was excited for this! I was happy I was invited to preference, even after my not so good conversation with my rusher the day before! I had talked with the Sorcerer’s Stone earlier and she had not been invited back to Harry Potter this round. I was sad for her, but she had been invited back to Severus Snape, which she liked, so she seemed okay! The party for Harry Potter was once again beautiful. We were at small individual tables with our rusher and there were some finger foods for us. The best part was that my name was written in chocolate sauce on the plate. I thought it was the cutest idea! My rusher this time was fantastic. I LOVED her. We had the best conversation with each other. We talked about how I liked to sing, and she said that was good because they needed singers! A senior read a letter and it was very sweet. A couple of the girls I talked to before said hi to me and stopped by to chat. Overall, I was just so comfortable and happy with Harry Potter. I was certain this was the place for me.

My final preference party was with Hermione Granger! I was excited since they had been growing on me. We were taken in and sat down at a specified seat where they had cookies with our names written on them! I was loving all this food with our name on it! It was a delicious cookie but I didn’t finish it because my rusher and I got along so well! She was so cool and funny. This was the first person I talked to that I felt I could actually be best friends with. We were both tour guides so we talked about that. She told me how goofy and weird all of the Hermione Grangers could be but they somehow managed to mesh so perfectly. It was great. Their recruitment chair came over to personally introduce herself to me and she was very nice. We were then taken into a room to experience part of their rituals and it was literally one of the most heartwarming things I had ever seen. These girls truly loved each other and loved being Hermione Grangers. I left this party feeling beyond confused. This whole time I had consistently loved Harry Potter. I had been convinced that they were the house for me. But now Hermione Granger had really captured my heart. I didn’t know what to do!

We went back to our Rho Gamma sections and got our final cards to fill out. We were recommended to rank all of the parties that we were invited to but I decided to not put Ron Weasley on my list. I had consistently ranked them low and had yet to have a good experience there. I didn’t want to get a bid from them because I didn’t think that I would accept. But I was now struggling with which house to rank first. I had loved Harry Potter. I always left there feeling excited and happy. But I had liked Hermione Granger too and their preference party had really won me over! I didn’t know what to do. I sat there a long time with another girl in my group. She said she didn’t know what to do because there had been rumors of a new chapter colonizing in the fall so she felt like she wanted to wait. Our Rho Gamma dismissed these rumors and told her to rank the houses she had. I then decided to ask my Rho Gamma for advice. We talked about the parties and about which I liked better. After our conversation, she told me I got really defensive when she brought up the idea of me not being in Harry Potter and that because of this, this was the one I probably wanted most. I realized she was right, and ranked:

1. Harry Potter
2. Hermione Granger

I decided overall, I would be happy in either of these houses!

Bid Day will be posted Saturday morning! (There is a reason for me making you wait, I swear!)
