California Greek Systems

I'm interested if anyone has input on the following schools and their Greek Systems. I know all of our CA schools are AWESOME, but I really am interested in the following if you have any feedback on the schools/area/Greek Life:

CSU: Bakersfield, San Luis Obispo (Polytech), Pomona (Polytech), Dominguez Hills, Fresno, Hayward, Long Beach, CSU-LA, Northridge, San Marcos, Stanislaus, Humboldt State, San Fran State, San Jose State, Sonoma State, Chapman, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Santa Clara U, Stanford

UC: Davis, Irvine, Riverside, UC-San Diego, Santa Cruz, U of Pacific, U of San Fran, Westmont College

FYI **UCSF is a med school. They may have some honor and professional but that's it.

SF State--Anti greek campus.(

Officially, there are not the kind of organizations for the Greek systems at those two schools like there is one for SDSU. Such as the IFC, NPC and NPHC could be improved...

That is all I know currently...

Cal Poly Pomona has 4 NPC sororities. House total is 65 members. Quota is usually between 15-19 during formal recruitment. All four houses seem to be doing well right now.

I believe there are around 8-9 NIC Fraternities. When I was on campus two years ago membership ranged from 10-about 60 members each. The sizes of the fraternities seem to fluctuate.

There are also several local sororities and fraternities, asian based and latino/a based.

I am not sure about NPHC fraternities or sororities. I know that there was a flier for Delta Sigma Theta on campus when I was there a couple of months ago.

In my opinion, Cal Poly is not a pro-greek campus. It seems like the greeks are really involved on campus, more so than other organizations. However, a large portion of the campus community does not see the greek organizations in a positive light.

Lambda Chi @ Cal Poly SLO was/is awesome. I can chalk up 95% of the fun I had in college to fraternity. I don't know what type of feedback you're looking for, though...

IFC & NPC maintain a Web site, but it is currently down. You can keep trying http://www.cpgreeks.com. My guess is that they forgot to pay the bill to keep it up and running over the summer.

Berkeley - I know you didn't ask about UCB specifically but I figured I'd share anyways. Berkeley has a very, very old greek row (probably the oldest in the state?). Campus reaction is mixed... Greeks are very visible because of their housing but the school seems to like them less and less (more dry-house rules have some into effect, etc...) yet they still cary the school socially.

Irvine - 12 on campus greek houses and another dozen or so without chapter houses. The school is rather anti-greek both admin and student population wise (editorials bashing the greek system and a general dislike by the admin for the "parties" and "negative role of greeks"). However UCI is a commute school so greeks make up much of the social life on the campus and clearly play an important part in the school as I've been told.

Riverside - Houses are rather spread out and from what I hear greek life is growing there. I know there are several big chapters but I've always had the impression that it wasn't a very big system.

Long Beach State - I'm not sure what the housing is like but there is certainly a greek presence on the school. You see plenty of LB greeks around Southern California and they're certainly a fair amount of parties which implies their system is indeed active.

Generally the UC's tend to dislike greeks IMO and accordingly most schools are under 10% Greek with very odd systems. If you read the rush threads or other threats about greek life they tend to show a very different story than UC greeks would tell. At nearly every UC and California state school I have been to I hear the same stories about problems with admin, problems with students who really do not like Greeks and such.

I am originally from that area and I didn't even know they had greek life there. I have friends who went there, still had no idea. I tried to look at the schools greek life website, but it wouldn't come up. Who knows???

SDSU= Only SD school with chapter housing, all three main councils are very active on campus (IFC, PHC, USFC (Cultural)). Most of NPHC are metro chapters so not as exclusive to holding events at SDSU besides step shows. Community "understands" greek life, but does not condone it. Campus is becoming more open to us again.

I go to Cal State Hayward, and we have NO greek life. I mean it's fun but there are only 2 sororities and 2 fraternities. There are also all but 1 of the NPHC orgs, but their numbers are pretty low, so I don't see then too ofter, every once in a while I see AKA's with their helluv cute jackets.

Overall our President is a meanie and she doesn't really support greek life so it's at a low right now

UOP and Westmont are not actualy UC schools although both are actually located in CA. The other UC schools are Berkeley and UCLA as well as Merced (which will open this fall, I believe?)

I go to UC Santa Cruz, which has an extremely anti-greek atmosphere (which, with the filming of FL2 is becoming more widely well-known) If you would like to see more information about the greek system at UCSC and the lack of acceptance of it, I would recommend my sister wishinhopin(Corina)'s thread "Rush at UCSC"

San Fran State has about 30 (I think) GLOs on campus BUT is a small system, the biggest org has AT most 60 people.. the smallest less than 20 the students and admin. are fairly anti greek... but there are some things of interest about our system...

1st is that the local organizations out number the national (IFC, NPC, NPHC Etc) orgs by quite a bit... 3 NPC orgs, 3 NIC frats (1 of which is VERY small) the rest of the afore mentioned 30 orgs are local in nature (I think 1 belongs to the multicultural council)

2nd The system is fairly young... (My chpater, is one of the oldest on campus and was founded in 1981) but this is only because we were kicked off campus in the 60's "damn the man" revolution

I could go on, but I don't know if you want that much info or now

I know UCLA's system is old and it is pretty large from friends... but it's not too well received by some... UCLA is such a huge school that even a lot of people don't make up a large percentage of general university's population.

CSU Bakersfield only has 2 NPC sororities... (Phi Sigma Sigma) and Gamma Phi Beta)

Stanislaus only has 2 NPC sororities (Phi Sig and Alpha xi Delta) ... but the school is very supportive of the greeks and greeks are very active on campus and support the only social scene on a commuter campus. we have a transfer from there and she told us about their system

Chapman, I know that they just added a Alpha Gam chapter (our AGD's went down there to help charter it) this year... so they must be growing #'s wise and pretty strong to support expansion... I'm not sure if that's the type of info you need.. and I don't know too much about fraternity life at some of these schools.. but I hope this helped you !!

Honestly I think out of all the schools where I *personally* know people involved in the greek system I'd have to say that USC or Berkely is the strongest system in the state. They are both old, established systems with beautiful houses and chapters that have a good amount of people in them. Although Berkely has been putting some restraints on alcohol and whatever (which, BTW as someone who has attended parties in those lovely houses in the hills there's still PLENTY of alcohol flowing, they just know who's consuming it now becuase of guests lists)... The university still supports greek life by having paid advisors, easy acess to facilities for events and all that good stuff. USC the system seems very united and supported by the university

hope that helped you, sorry I don't know more specifically about fraternities, but I pay more attention to sororities beause I know more about how they work

I just like to add that the Zeta Omicron Chapter of Delta SIgma Phi Fraternity has been producing gentlemen at CSUH for over 20 years, and I was able to roomate with one of them at Convention, and umm........we rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
