Detroit

Ok. So I heard on the radio this morning when they were talking to Detroit Mayor Kilpatrick, that the coach of the LA Lakers was talking smack about Detroit and how people wouldn't wana spend much time here.

This pisses me off. While many parts of Detroit are slums and unoccupied housing (which makes me sick because many of these buildings are gorgeous), Downtown Detroit is oozing with opportunity and fun stuff. I never participate in this stuff, but on one corner you've got baseball, football, Hockeytown Cafe, theaters, many other bars, a Comedy club, and not too far away is hockey.

This coach needs to do a lil more research before he comes to our town again. He'll be staying in Birmingham... not exactly the slums at all. And traveling to Auburn Hills... again not exactly the slums.

So... seriously people... we may be the murder capital of the world, and if you get lost in the cracktown neighborhoods downtown and give someone the wrong look someone might bust a cap in yo ass... but give Detroit some lovin.

We're a good city! And we could care less that our baseball team and football team suck! And we're not sore losers when things don't go our way! GIVE US SOME LOVE!

I got Detroit love... do you?

I second your Detroit love, PM_Mama!

I just read an article on yahoo news yesterday that Detroit is starting to woo the young, "creative" types.

Oh, and...

Fear the Fro!

The Good:
Martin took place there
Eminem and D12 are from there
It's in Mich which is a cool state (Strongest DSP chapters)
Pistons...you're gonna lose, but I'd rather see them than Indiana, plus Rasheed the homey (He's a blazer true and true though)

The Bad:
Red Wings suck (Sorry, Avs fan )
Tigers...I'll stop there
Lions...oops, no help there either

This is about the love, Stan, not the hate.

Take your hate elsewhere.

My Dad was a Delt Sig at a Michigan school! Yes, no 'a' b/c as I learned from you, that's a Michigan nickname for DSP.

I'm with ya on loving Detroit. I work in Detroit and have for many years. It's great to work near Wayne State with all the great restaurants down there and Taste Fest is an event we always look forward to! There is so much more to do downtown now that Comerica Park and Ford Field are down there, and Mike Illitch has revitalized this city. It is definitely on the upswing and people will see that with the 2006 Super Bowl.

Sadly, Second City is moving to the northern suburbs (Birmingham, I think).

I've never known anybody who got mugged, raped, or murdered in Detroit. I think the crime is going on in the gang infested neighborhoods and you just have to avoid those. Stay on the beaten path around the major downtown attractions and you don't have any troubles. When I was at Cobo Hall for a seminar recently, there was a guy collecting cans from the trash for cash, but he wasn't bugging anybody at all. I gave him a bag to put them in and he thanked me profusely.

I do have complaints, but we'll stick to the love for now! It has the potential to be an awesome city.

Dee

The one time I've been to Detroit was on my way back from Toronto. All I can say is the city needs to clean up the blight in the area of the interstate if it wants to put its best foot forward. While I've never actually pulled off the interstate in that town, I would have been afraid to just because of the way the place looked.

Sounds like a great place though (if you know what to do and where to go).

PM_MaMa,

I agree. There's alot to see and do in Detroit if you just look past its "reputation". Just like everyone before me has said, just stay out of certain neighborhoods and you will be fine.

Yes, apparently they've always been the "jocks". Dad was a basketball player.

On another Detroitish note - that I know should go in the Entertainment chit chat section - who was it that won that basketball game last night?!? Oh right, the DETROIT PISTONS!!!!
