We had a "Italian Wedding" exchange and it was one of the BEST exchanges we have ever had. It was kind of a week long event, leading up to the exchange. On monday, the pres. of the fraternity came with his "groomsmen" and proposed to our pres. Then we were sent inviatations to the wedding... the bridal party had a "dress rehersal dinner" on Wed. and then on Thursday before the exchange we had a bachlorette party for our bride to be and the guys had a bachelor party.

At the hall where we held the party, as we got off the bus the men were in a recieving line and we were escorted one by one into the hall to our seats. (All the girls wear the same color dress except for the bridesmaids who wore a different color, the guys wore shirts and ties). It went on like a normal wedding but it was REALLY obnoxious and loud because it was supposed to be like a stereotypical Italian maffia wedding. Afterwards it was like a reception with cake, dancing and ahem, a lot of drinking.... you just have to embellish on the small stuff and it will be an AWESOME party! I hope this helps you!

at my school i saw an "italian wedding." it wasn't my sorority, though. the week before, the groom was nominated by his fraternity. he chose some girl (just a friend) to be the bride, and the rest of the wedding party was informally chosen. someone was nominated to be the priest.

the night of the party began like any regular college kegger, but the girls were wearing thrift store prom dresses and the guys were just random. when planning an italian wedding it is key to hold off on the ceremony until everyone is very drunk. they stopped the dj and the wedding ceremony began. the priest says a funny (made up on the spot) speech, and they go through the motions of the wedding. it is seriously rowdy and loud. it was a really fun mixer.

Here's how we do our annual wedding mixer (it's a sorority initiation party):
-first, girls and guys break up into seperate rooms, and have bachelor/bachelorette parties (girls drink punch and get male strippers, the guys pass around a handle of beam and sing songs and play dozens)
-later we come together, marry off two seniors (preferably w/ a 'history'), and throw cake on them
-eventually it becomes a big food fight, w/ champagne and cake everywhere - it's amazing

Our wedding mixer is not like the typical "Italian" wedding. First we match up with a sorority that has about the same number of members as we do. The basement of our house is decorated as a "Singles Bar" and everyone mixes down there for while until they find someone to "hook up" with. These two people find the bartender and have to drink two beers before they are given their marriage license. Then they go upstairs to the "church." Here we have cheesy firehall wedding decorations and we have a mock wedding ceremony. To cosummate the wedding the couple does a shot together. Then they are given their rings. These are just simply paper rings that are handed in at the next station. They then move onto the area of the house called "The Seven Year Stretch" (because if you stay married for seven years, then you are supposed to be together for ever)here the couple just hangs out with the other couples, and has to drink two cups of punch before moving on. Next they travel to the "Proving Grounds" Here the couple has to prove their love for each other. They have to perform in front of the judges to win their approval and stay together forever. They have to do this anyway they can. Dancing or any other wild talents. We have a rule that no one wins the first time through. The first three couples to win get a bottle of 20/20 or something like that. If the judges do not feel that you are not made for each other you get handed your divorce papers. You then procede to the third floor of the house, or "divorce court" here you do a nasty shot, end your marriage and are sent back to the basement to try all over again. Everyone does this until everyone is married or too messed up to care. This mixer always goes over really well with the sororities, and it is a hell of a lot of fun.

SigTau--The way you guys do it would definitely not be allowed by our advisors. But I bet it's great for the "spontaneous" mixers. I gotta ask though, are the Judges the sober drivers? Cause knowing how I get after a few drinks I'd be trying to burn through as many husbands as possible. LOL

Socal...

What is up with how your advisors handle your mixers? Ours have no say in what we do? I am just wondering. I don't think our system here is as well organized. We are mainly on our own. Actually, I have never met our advisor. We don't have anyone who is a designated "Sober Driver" but we do have Risk Management Teams. Our houses are located right off campus, so everyone walks so there is really no need for drivers. Our RM teams are trained in CPR and First-Aid though so we all our bases covered.

I think I'd be passed out before I ever ended up with the rings!

Hey SigTau!

Our nationals requires that any social in which chapter funds is used, have at least one advisor present. Basically she acts as a chaperone. And trust me it's a lot easier for "an adult" to talk the cops out of shutting down a party than a couple of college students. She also makes sure that everyone has a sober driver and she'd also be allowed to cut you off if you get to out of hand.

Our advisors generally let the youngest one take care of socials. This means that she's usually cool enough to let all the girls have the fun but responsible enough to lay down the law. It's not unheard of for us to finish the icebreaker only to have her very loudly announce that the party is over and she's sure that we'll all leave immediately and not have an after party. So she "completed" her duty and we get our fun!

The only thing I hate about it is that you have to hunt down someone who is willing to spend her Saturday night at a party where she can't cut loose.

I have noticed though that the fraternities never have advisors present. Personally, now that I'm an alumna, if I were to pull chaperone duty; I would request that the guys had someone there. For one thing, they'd probably listen to him more. And I'd have someone to chat w/ too. If the chaperones are chatting they can't put a damper on anyones buzz.

Every weekend we have sober drivers available. A drunk sister would just call her sober sisters on the chapter cell phone and they'd come get her and her car. We don't have houses at my school, and nobody walks anywhere in SoCal! So it's definitely a bonus.

We used to do this program w/ a fraternity but there were a few nights that the guys either completely flaked or brought beer along! But mainly the sober girls and guys would either study together, just hang out, or actually hit the town. As long as they were in the county they could do whatever they wanted. It's a good way to start a relationship w/ another chapter so I completely recomend everyone do it.
