Beta Theta Pi - Alpha Chapter closure at Miami (OH)

Super sad to see this, but kudos to the University and to AO for being firm in its values.

Note: the official Beta press release is not loading. Not sure if there is any additional information outside of what Miami (OH) has reported.

That's the 2nd Alpha chapter to close at Miami for RMF. Sigma Chi closed our Alpha Chapter two years ago.

Sad, but reasonable under the circumstances.
Miami (OH) has been seeing quite a lot of closures and sanctions recently -- something in the water there, or just more awareness / willingness to take tough action when warranted?

The Greek society culture at Miami of ohio has been really lacking in serious leadership for a few years now. There have been numerous problems with several of the houses both fraternity and sorority alike on that campus in recent years. I live very close to the school and the sad thing is that it's considered a top notch university, but the media always catches wind of the bad things the houses are doing.

Irresponsible behavior at some of their functions caused problems years ago as well. Several houses had a formal at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in downtown Cincinnati and they totally trashed the facilities with several of the groups members being caught urinating in some of the displays fauna.....

One would think tho that having ones HQ located less than a mile from the chapter that the chapters would be better managed and not do silly or dumb things....

Actually it's the third Alpha chapter to close. Phi Kappa Tau's alpha chapter is also currently suspended due to RM issues.

"Miami has more than 50 fraternity and sorority chapters comprising nearly 4,000 of its 15,000 undergraduate students, the large majority of whom work to develop character and leadership skills through their Greek affiliations. Last year, sorority and fraternity members tallied 19,694 hours of community service. Their mean GPA of 3.19 slightly surpasses Miami's non-Greek student population."

This was a very classy paragraph on the part of the university. Good for them.

Agreed. Too bad someone didn't proofread, though. I doubt that 50+ fraternity and sorority chapter comprise nearly 4,000 students; more likely that the chapters are comprised of 4,000+ students.

Grammar mistakes in press releases from educational institutions are not good PR.

I went to Miami. I think it's a combination? There's always been a lot of rich party kids on campus who are used to doing whatever they want without consequences, but it's also a highly ranked school that attracts a lot of smart kids who want to stand up and lead and do what's right and not sweep bad behavior under the rug. The school administration is generally very supportive of the positive parts of Greek life.

I was really surprised by Beta...when I was there and as recently as when my younger sister graduated (2010), they were a "top" fraternity but with the reputation of being total gentlemen you could take home to meet your parents. I had a lot of friends in the chapter and they were pretty adamant about not hazing.

Sorry, but M-W disagrees with you:

"Greek leaders at Miami University are growing concerned about a trend of bad behavior that's led to multiple sorority and fraternity suspensions over the past several years"

It only takes one bad pledge class to bring down an entire chapter.
