“Keep it real, pimp!” yelled an onlooker as Luke Murray accepted his crown and the honor of being named Delta Zeta’s Mr. UK 2005. Murray’s uncanny impersonation of Kip from Napoleon Dynamite, his angel-like voice, and his heartfelt answer in the final round made him stand out from the rest.
When the curtains first opened, everyone could tell this was not going to be an ordinary pageant. Nearly thirty guys, dressed in khakis and white t-shirts, one-two-stepped their way across the stage to an interesting dance mix. Pelvis thrusting and ass shaking were the most popular moves from the contestants, with an occasional tootsie roll thrown in to mix it up.
After all the contestants introduced themselves the swimsuit competition began. We’re not talking swim trunks here—these guys made swim-wear costumes. There were a couple mermen, a hula dancer, a bikini, and one Speedo. The creativity was inspiring.
Unfortunately, the field needed to be narrowed down to 12, and those contestants chosen would perform a talent of some sort (and I’m using the word “talent” loosely here). Some sang and most danced, but there were three performances that stood out.
Dave McMurray appeared on stage dressed in a black skintight leotard with a silver swim cap on. He pranced and danced all over the stage. He then surprised the audience with his excellent ribbon twirling abilities and his use of a blue ball. It was a very original number. McMurray was later voted Mr. Congeniality by the other contestants.
Chris Sherry reenacted a scene from Friends for his talent. Does everyone remember the episode where Ross and Monica dance on Dick Clark’s Rockin’ News Years Eve? Well Chris and his partner obviously watched the scene many times. They had the exact choreography down and would have made the Gellars proud.
Bruce Hatcher’s impersonation of Anchorman’s Ron Burgundy was hilarious. He even had his own News Team that assembled on stage and sang “Afternoon delight”. The 70’s style costumes and the perfect harmonies of the quartet claimed Hatcher a spot in the top five. The other top five contestants included Matt Thompson, Luke Murray, Matthew Hemberger and Chris Nolan.
After a short question and answer session, the 2005 Mr. UK and the runners-up were named. Second-runner-up was Chris Nolan. First-runner-up was crowd favorite Matthew Hemberger. Luke Murray was crowned Mr. UK 2005, and seems more than qualified to take on the task.
