Fraternity Colonizing at Vanderbilt

Sigma Phi Epsilon is coming to Vanderbilt in mid-February, according to the student paper.

Congeratulations and best wishes to Sig Ep, and to all Greeks that are expanding this year.

Are all the fraternity houses university owned? And is there an empty one that use to house Phi Delta Theta? If not, perhaps they will be renting or plan to build.

From the article, it sounds like they won't have a house:

"I have every faith that this group will be successful without a facility," Torry said, referring to the fact that SigEp will not have a fraternity house on campus.

No. Most of them are, but our chapter owns its house, which the university wants to buy. My understanding is that they can neither rent nor build on campus. Perhaps someone knows otherwise.

I wish them the best of luck, but they'll have a hard time being competitive without a house, on that campus, over a sustained period.

Sig Ep finally at Vandy?? interesting! I was involved with
the Lambda Chi colony there in the early 90's....at the
end, it was a decision between Sig Ep and Lambda Chi.
Big issue was A HOUSE:

There was a dieing local there that got to pick which one.
They had a "garage" on frat row...not a whole house.

Admin stipulated that the new frat would not have a house,
and that neither the chapter nor the national HQ should
push for one once chartered.

LXA reps, being the "goodie 2 shoes", agreed they would
not push for a house, nor support the chapter in pushing
for a house, if they were chosen. LXA also emphasized
its strict alcohol policy, and anti-hazing Asocc. Mem. program.

SigEp promised to use all the pressure they could muster
from alums nation-wide to get them a house, and would
of course help with financing once approved. SigEp
"let it be known" they gave a nod and a wink to alcohol
as long as no one was hurt or arrested.

In the end, LXA was chosen and for the first few years
had only a "garage" (next door to SAE, now underneath
that new Hotel). Then Gamma Phi Beta closed and the
LX's got their house.

I'd be amazed if Phi D Th didn't return to Vandy, but oh
well, maybe the campus has changed since I was there
10 years ago. They used to take almost all members
from Nashville/Tennesse families (meaning they have
ALOT of nearby alums), and self-limited the number of
bids they gave out. Though they were not one of
the largest frats at Vandy, it was much harder to
get their bid than most's....truly put quality over
quantity to work!

And I wonder if SigEp was so "bullyish" about chartering
there this time....we'll support our chapter (even against
the admin) come Hell or High Water!!

Good luck to 'em! They'll prolly end up with a house eventually!
Might have to be happy with a garage or some such
until then!

Due to the relatively strong alumni support (especially financially) in the Nashville area for Tennessee Alpha (versus Tennessee Zeta, my chapter)...I'm guessing that a housing corporation owns the house, not the university. Some time after TN A's charter was revoked, I drove by the house and saw people hanging out there - so I'm wondering if there are members who still live there, etc. Anyone who goes to Vandy have any insight on this?

I'd like to see Phi Delt return to Vandy and restore its long history there...maybe in a few years, GHQ will be able to organize a great group of guys to give it another try.

Anyways, good luck to Sig Ep!

I ran into some Vandy Lambda Chi's this summer, and I
believe they told me that the NPHC groups (traditionally
african american) are using the old Phi Delta Theta house.

The NPHC groups usually only have a handful of members
each and have often shared a house where ever one's available.

I _think_ the admin owns all fraternity/sorority houses
at Vandy except Phi Kappa Psi.
