Badges & Pins

It's been a while since GLO badges & pins have been discussed (well, at least a week! ), but I got my Adelphean today and the lead article was on... the history of the Alpha Delta Pi pin! ("Diamonds Are Forever", The Adelphean, Winter 2003)

There are some tidbits that I didn't know, such as each ADPi pin being made by individually, and assembled by hand, and that descendants of one of the original Adelpheans (1851) are still being initiated with the same pin to this day!

There are also the rules of wearing the pin (the basic "church attire" rules), and many pictures of the pin through the past 152 years.

I am techno-impaired, or I would try to show y'all the picture of the Grand President's pin that's shown. If you're familiar with our diamond pin, try to picture it with two rows of 44 diamonds around it! Awesome!

There's a really great article on Alpha Phi's history and heritage -- including the history of our pin -- in the Fall 2002 issue of The Quarterly. You can download ithere.

Is the ADPi article available electronically? I'd love to read it.

These articles seem to be popping up all over several different GLO publications within the last 6 months or so. It looks like both Auld-Patterson-Burr and Legacy-Masters-of-Design are making a little marketing push. Clever idea.

The evolution of these 2 companies is very interesting to me personally because as they have split and merged over the last 100+ years, they have changed their techniques and their hallmarks. A thorough knowledge of their history can be useful in dating a badge that is not otherwise marked.

Perhaps these articles may help to explain a collector's fascination with badges. It is interesting to know how they are manufactured today, but this process is actually fairly dull and sterile compared to the handmade badges of the 19th century.

In the Fall of 2001 Issue of our Triangle we also had a similar article. It was interesting to see the minute changes that had happened to the badge as time went on. Although the design is the same, it is now much cleaner than the original.

Thank you! The top badge is a sample of the "original" pin - since they were made individually, this is the basis, but each was personalized. The other badge is similar to mine.

The Grand President's pin isn't pictured online (to my knowledge). It's the bottom pin, but with two rows of diamonds surrounds the black badge portion. Awesome!

AOP has an article on our jewelry in the Summer 2002 issue of To Dragma (our magazine). It also explains the evolution of Masters of Design out of Balfour.

You can find the article here. Follow the link to 'To Dragma' then to 'Summer 2002' and then to the article titled "Maintaining A Legacy (AOII Jewelry)". You can also see the current badges offered by visiting the 'Emporium' from this site.

Our Badge has remained the same over the years in design but until around 1965 members were able to customize to some extent. I have collected many of these variations over the years - if anyone wants to take a peek click here (Our IHQ resells any badges after 1920 as historic badges to our members)

Currently the only variations from those currently offered to all members is a 'Ruby A' badge available only as an honor badge and an ALL diamond badge available only to our International Executive Board members (one of our local alumnae has one of these and it is GORGEOUS!) Our XB President also has a version of our Chapter Presidents' ring set with a cabochon ruby instead of the usual onyx.
