Conflict on Initiation Night???
Hi everybody -
I need some advice... I have been rushing a local sorority, and have accepted a bid. Unfortunately, I just found out that I have a conflict on initiation night. I don't know what to do! I talked to the rush chair about it, but I haven't heard back from her yet. I don't want to miss out on pledging, but I know that Initiation night is one of the big nights you definitely can't miss!
What should I do?

What can be more important than initiation? What is the conflict?
I think you should go to initiation.

You did?? I didn't think someone could do that. So you were initiated anyway? Unfortunately I can't be there for even part - I'm going to be out of town

You're in a local so I don't know what to say.
However, with NPC sororities, most women know 6-8 weeks ahead of time when initiation is.
The chapter must register the initiation date ahead of time and have it APPROVED by their International Headquarters, so it takes some planning to have it all set up.
I would talk to someone again in your chapter and find out.
You don't give the reasons WHY you will be out of town.
If it is something like a funeral or a wedding, I think that is understandable. If it is something like you're going to visit your best friend at another college, I don't know how favorably that would be looked upon.
Initiation is considered very important, so I would talk to your sorority's officers and try to resolve the problem, or try to change your plans (if possible). Good luck to you!

I just found out today, and it's this weekend
I can't say a whole lot about why I'm out of town, to anyone (including my hopefully-sisters). It is something important, and it can't be changed - it's not just going away to party or something....but a lot of it can't be revealed until it's all over. I know it sounds sketchy, and I'm sure it probably does to the girls too, but I really just can't say.
I'm just crushed... I haven't heard back yet

How many pledges are there? If it's a smaller group they should be able to reschedule.
However, unless this is a wedding or something on that plane I think you should make every effort to alter your plans.

Does anyone else think its unusual that they wouldn't give a date for initiation until the week of?

I know our initiation date is well know, right there on the calendar But there are some other groups on campus that don't tell their new members when initiation is . . . I don't know that I like this (my schedual is soooo planned out) but whatever works for them . . . (they're not panhel)

From what I know, not letting the new member know their initiation date is concidered hazing. Our new members know the initiation date when they are pinned, in both orgs!

Yes, that is true for virtually all NPC orgs (and I totally agree with you), but remember she is in a local sorority, so therefore, they are not bound by the same rules that the NPC sororities are.

I just reread this, and I think she means induction, not initiation. If she's been rushing and just accepted a bid, I doubt they are initiating already.
