Actually, yes he did. It was publishers who took to using ee cummings rather than E.E. Cummings.
And he did sometimes use capital letters in his poetry -- he just used capitalization (and punctuation and typography) in an unconventional manner for poetic effect, such as "i" rather than "I." ("I am a small eye poet," he once wrote to his mother.) Nevertheless, one of the poems in
XAIPE is
i thank You God for most this amazing day. The poet emphasizes his own humility by not capitalizing "i" while capitalizing "You God."
But as you say, it's one thing to do this in a short poem with short lines. It's quite different in a long paragraph.
