I agree.
Some women have enough confidence and radiance to make almost anything look "ladylike." I hate the term "ladylike," by the way.

According to the rules, you may wear a t-shirt while fully made up with salon-styled hair. Said t-shirt must be worn with a wool knee-length skirt and closed-toe pumps. Of course pantyhose are a must at all times. Please only wear said ensemble while smiling continuously and performing community service, unless said community service is being performed in a neighborhood where the median income is less than $80,000 per year. You may not wear said t-shirt unless you have showered within 14 hours. We recommend carrying an additional shirt, such as a crisply ironed white button down, in a garmet bag so you may change if you exceed the acceptable 14-hour shower window before returning home. Please check the store for portable irons and ironing boards emblazoned with sorority letters and crest.

Hmmmm.... This girl: http://www.sigmasigmasigma.org/pages...ndise::default
might not be considered "presentable" by some...

I think you're misunderstanding me. Yes, the store sells that stuff and we are allowed to wear it, just not to work out. It's not the item, it's where you are wearing it.
And really, people are making a huge deal about being presentable. Everbody knows how to make an effort to shower, do their hair, not smell bad, maybe put some lip gloss or chapstick on. It's not like being asked to put on a FULL FACE of make up everyday and wear heels with $200 jeans. It's just taking an extra 10-15 minutes to make sure that you don't look like you just rolled out of bed.

I think this might be along the lines of what the OP was trying to get across in the no more hope (?) thread. For some reason, people seem to get their panties in a wad when it comes to appearance.
I didn't know Sigmas couldn't work out in their letters. Is that really a national policy or just one of your by-laws? Sigmas on my campus used to wear letters to work out in fairly regularly. All Greeks did. (Ok, I'm sure not ALL Greeks did, but my point is that it was acceptable to.)

I don't know -- I'm pretty understanding of the no more hope thread, but this is nutty. I think it's one thing to (and I admit I'm being generous to sockpuppet3) try to improve the image of your organization and try to think of ways to help sisters take good care of themselves.
It's another thing entirely to make up some bogus ass rules. This stuff doesn't even make sense -- I mean, wet hair in a ponytail and no makeup? WTF? A rule against mixing pink and orange (see link posted by Taualumna, where the woman also appears to have a ponytail -- okay as long as hair is dry?) would make more sense.
The other troublesome thing about the "rules" posted is this:
In general, we're supposed to display apppropriate behavior when wearing letters. No swearing, being bitchy to the Starbucks guy, walking in a half hour late to class and then sleeping through it, etc.
COME ON NOW. That's just insulting. Do the people who made this rule, if it really exists, have so little respect for members of this organization that they have to impose rules to get them to act like human beings? Honey, you're supposed to display appropriate behavior, such as not being bitchy to the Starbucks guy or sleeping through class, because that's what people do. It has nothing to do with letters or representing your organization, and to say that it does is an insult to you and your sisters.

This thread is getting a little out of control.
And, as much as I hate to say it, I agree with alum on the boat shoes thing. Everyone I know wears boat shoes... are they not popular in some areas?

Didn't Jocelyn say on the first page of this thread that "We're told to use our "best discretion" in deciding whether or not something we're doing is letter appropriate"?
I have a hard time believing any national NPC group has rules like that in its national bylaws-- and also a hard time believing they are even written out like that in the chapter bylaws.
I don't doubt that chapter members may claim those are the rules- I just don't think they are spelled out like that.

That seems pretty spelled-out to me. It seems difficult to the point of ridiculousness to enforce, which is why I find it so amusing and comment-worthy.
As for boat shoes, I've not seen anyone in Denver or Chicago wearing them. That said, there are many things people often wear in the south that I've never seen -- I'm sure it's a regional thing.

Or regional in your local area. Grosse Pointe is the only area in metro Detroit that boat shoes are a staple.

Yes, but I don't think that is what the bylaws say. I think they more likely have an overzealous Standards committee.

The rule just states that we should be "presentable and display appropriate behavior". I think every chapter's definition of "presentable" varies.
The only issue with rule is that each year's committee sort of finds new "things" that constitute being inappropriate. The rudeness and lateness thing just became an issue for this year. The rule is open to interpretation by standards. It's been pretty interesting.
