Surely you realize that people are talking about legal benefits to marriage in addition to making a long term commitment to love each other and be faithful to each other because they are in love. People who love each other in that way want to be able to share their lives, their money, their benefits, etc. Heterosexuals have those perks, homosexuals do not. Most people do not get married for the sole reason of having children. Why would you see senior citizens who are beyond child bearing years getting married if that were true? There are numerous financial and legal benefits to being married. However, that doesn't mean that people get married for only that reason. Sometimes those benefits aren't worth putting up with the person, which is why some people choose to divorce. From sharing Social Security income to visiting your partner in ICU, there are numerous benefits to marriage, to someone you love.

Please tell me how many senior citizens there are that get married.

My grandfather and his wife...married when he was 72 and she was 68. My father-in-law and his wife when she was 74 and he was 71 (religious only, not legal due to pension concerns!)

That is two without even having to dig for info.

How do Domestic Partner benefits fit in with this? I mean, we're talking about all the legal benefits and all that... don't domestic partner benefits cover all of that already?

The 100+ elderly men and women I worked with last year at this hospital didn't. I'm beating you by 80 and I didn't even have to dig for info. Honestly, put some thought into what you say.

I would just refer back to the Separate but Equal doctrine that we had in this country in the early part of the 20th century. Why didn't that work?

Also, DP benefits do cover, well, probably some of that already, but no one is really required to adhere to it. Like, a company can choose to give benefits to spouses but still exclude domestic partners. No DP at all get federal legal/tax coverage and it still doesn't cover random things (like a lot of car rental companies will only let another person drive without an extra charge if they are your spouse). So, even then it's Separate but Not Equal.

11,146 women over the age of 50 got married in Texas in 1999. Over 500 of those were over the age of 75. (I don't consider 50 a senior citizen but they are past child bearing age).

Approximately 900 grooms over the age of 50 were married in Nebraska in 2002.

These stats all seem to kept by state and I can't find (in the time I'm willing to put into this) stats for the whole country. But, senior citizens DO get married.

Domestic Partner benefits aren't offered by many employers. My company does offer same sex domestic partner insurance, but you have to pay full price (about $300 per pay period), where I could cover a spouse for free.

Lots of people got tired of benefits in 1997.

Marriages in 1997: 2,384,000
Divorces in 1997: 1,163,000

Senior citizen divorces in 2002: 2.5 million

And in your statistics it seems only 500 senior citizens out of however many marriages in texas get married...barely a drop in the pool.

Trees do fly...not many but some do I suppose.

Yes, as I said before, sometimes the benefits aren't worth putting up with the person.

I'm smarter than you. Get used to it. I'm smarter than most people here. Not all, but most. So I get annoyed when people try and come up with bullshit facts. I also get annoyed at people who pretend they're smart by using big words. I find it...gay.
