There's a head shop in a teeny tiny little town in northern Wisconsin, it's absolutely hilarious!

Headshop
Anyone from Pittsburgh who ever comes to Pittsburgh and wants to see a head shop, go to a place called Tela Rope, right by the Pitt campus.
The Atty General has actually been cracking down on them and trying to run them out for years.
It's actually a really neat store.... lots of "hippie" style things, neat jewlery (lots of body jewelry), funky candles, etc.
But they've been selling pipes and the like for ages.... and it's a well known stoner hang out

kddani. Why is it illegal for someone to possess drug paraphenalia but a store can sell it?

The stores sell them under the "impression" that they are going to be used for tobacco only (there are a lot of signs posted to that effect). Our local "head shop" is called Sunshine Daydream, so it gives you some impression of their clientele. I live in a teeny tiny conservative town, so if there's one there, I imagine every town has one! There are always tons in college towns--regardless of the campus politic.

Come to San Francisco and we'll take a walk down Haight Street. We could also go to UC Berkeley and enter one less than 100 feet from campus.
We have them in Alaska, but they grow certain kinds of herbs here one could use in items purchased there. Locally it is called "Matanuska Thunder**ck"

Then where is OURS!!!! They took out the VHS tapes that went beyond "The Postman Always Rings Twice" the only funky stuff is at that junk store (THE NAME FAILS ME) in the mall-you know the strobe lights-lava lamps...
Honestly, I loved looking around those types of shops. Back when, I loved the clothes and candles. The closest I've seen was in Manatou CO but it was more into the spiritual. I prefer seeing unusual items not all the mass produced in every corner store. OH STRICKLANDS is the name...I think!
Now to REALLY say somehing on topic. BR seems just too BLAH for my tastes. Everything looks so similar. I used to feel the same way about J Crewe, but that has improved. I did like A&F till about 3-4 years ago. Then it seemed the only thing unique was the way they did their Logo.
I thought most of the A&F workers wore khaki pants and a polo like shirt...do I have the wrong store in mind? Maybe management is treating it like a HOOTERS. The wings are good, but it's the "service" that brings the patrons back. Maybe all those unemplyed people should apply there!

I have an uncle who is an avid outdoorsman and still owns quite a few Abercrombie pieces of hunting gear from 10+ years ago. I think he even owns a few AF fishing lures, lol. Nowdays youd be just a sliekly to find an AF lure as a dangle on a shell necklace. lol. He also has this huge hunting scene print framed above his fireplace that says "Abercrombie and Fitch" across the bottom. It cracks me the FU.

So I am getting home from the pool hall and flipping through the channels and this movie is on from the 60's and I hear them talking about Abercombie, lol. About how its a fishing lure joint and sporting goods store. It made mw think of this post. Heres the caption from TVguide.com:
Man's Favorite Sport (1963) The man in question is Hudson, a fishing equipment salesman for Abercrombie & Fitch whose knowledge of fly-casting is limited to demonstrations in department-store showrooms. The sport in question is actually the pursuit of women, and the woman in question is Prentiss...
Abercrombie in the 60's was never like this...
hahha. All these fools in this 1960's movie talking about his boss at Abercrombie getting upset at him.

Abercrombie has in fact been in business since 1896 or whatever, however in the late 80's or early 90's the company was posting losses. At the same time, one of those big clothing retailers was looking to create a brand that appealed to this market segment. So I am not sure if it was Spiegel, or one of the limited companies, but one of them bought the AF name and trademarks and retooled it as what it is today, Essentially keeping only the name. So If I remember correctly, Its rither owned by one of those big retailers or is a part of one of them.

Apparently the correct info is:
Founded in 1892 as a purveyor of quality hunting and fishing gear, it counted clients ranging from Ernest Hemingway to President John F. Kennedy. In the hands of retailing conglomerate The Limited, which acquired Abercrombie in 1988, it grew into a national chain by pitching a casual, all-American look—a younger, more accessible version of Ralph Lauren. Abercrombie went public in October 1996 and spun off from The Limited in May 1998. - from the slate article linked above.
Just so we all know. lol.

There is a NYTimes article that came out 2 weeks ago about it if you're interested. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/13/bu...&ex=1093060800
Yup, Limited owns A&F.
Hollister is A&F's cheap version geared to younger teens (sorta like old navy and gap)
Little A is their new brand that's geared to elementary school kids.
And Ezra Fitch will be their new luxury line.

Didn't Hemingway kill himelf with an A&F shotgun?
They're really putting out a luxury line? Interesting.

Yup. He'd used the abercrombie shotgun for shooting pigeons and later himself.
