33girl, I know exactly what your talking about. I saw that movie in my English class when I was a Sophomore in High School (sometime during the 1988-89 academic year). It gave me nightmares and sleepless nights for many months. The irony was that I was with my class and teacher and it was partially dark (still some light from the outside). It still messed with my head!

I've never thought of the Virgin Suicides as "disturbing," maybe because I've seen a lot of stuff like that growing up, but seriously, read the book! The book, as always, is so much more complete in the storytelling and movies always leave out the interesting facts. Again, I'll reiterate- READ THE BOOK!

Although the storyline was stupid and pointless, 28 Days Later disturbed the hell out of me. I can't even watch the commercials for it now.

Seven freaked me out when I first saw it as a high school sophomore, but now it's not that bad, just gross.

An old close friend's mom made us watch Kids when it came out, just to scare us about sex (her more than me), but it didn't disturb me, per se, just made me realize you can't be stupid and you can't be too careful. So I guess her methodology worked in a way, at least for me. I can't vouch for that friend... maybe she should see the movie again...

Poltergeist disturbs me to this day, maybe because of my name association with the little girl and because it freaked me out as a kid...

I can't remember the name of the movie, but it starred Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino and had something to do with the devil... I was so freaked out by that movie even though Keanu's a horrible actor... ugh. Still scary...

The Virgin Suicides I thought was really disturbing....I really liked it though, and then as for SCARY...the ring....I saw it like two weeks ago and I'm still scared from it.....

I really liked the Virgin Suicides, maybe cuz I really like Kirsten Dunst.

As for The Ring... try watching that at a friend's house, who lives on a nearby island (Grosse Ile for Michigan people) that is pitch black at nite? Or I should add that one of my sisters' name is Samira... she's tall, skinny, with loooong straight dark brown hair.

Yes she resembles Samara VERY MUCH! We even made her pretend to climb out of the TV and it was like watching the movie. Definately creepy.

My parents weren't home when I got home so I drove around from 1am-4am waiting for them and still they hadn't gotten home. I fell asleep wtih my TV on and the volume up. I was so freaked out.

After reading the disturbing books thread, I had to come here and put my two cents in. While lately I have been sticking to happy fluffy movies (The Lizzy McGuire Movie, anyone?....I'm such a loser

) but a few come to mind:

Pet Cemetery: I always loved these movies, maybe because they were the first "horror" movies I ever saw, but one time when my brother was younger he came down and watched it with us, and I found him later curled up on his bed and shaking

- needless to say, I was a little more careful when he was around.

By the way, when doing a google search on how to spell it - I am that bad, how did I ever make it to University? - I found this site, which for whatever reason, I found a bit disturbing in more of a weird way

Titus (1999), based on Shakespeare's earliest play, "Titus Andronicus", and starring Anthony Hopkins, was seriously messed. Really disturbing, I found it hard to finish, but it had amazing cinematography. If you can stomach it, check it out just to say you did.

Warning: really disturbing rape scene, if you don't see the actual act, the before and after is more than enough.

I agree, Titus (both the play and the movie) was waaay disturbing. The movie was quite an interesting interpretation of the play, though-especially the mix of modern and ancient Roman times.

i see a lot of repeat votes for some movies as "most disturbing" i am sitting here laughing my ass off because i work at a video store and most of those are some of my FAVORITE movies and watch every chance i get.

CLOCKWORK ORANGE>>if you think the movie is a mind f***, read the book. the english version, not the american version. stanley kubrik (the movie's director) based the movie on the american version, which has the last chapter of the true version left out.

VANILLA SKY>>another great mind f***, but watch the original. oh, you didnt know it was a remake???? watch ABRA TUS OJOS (OPEN YOUR EYES)

nobody voted for I SHOT ANDY WARHOL. documentary style film on the women who claims to have shot andy warhol

8mm is freaky, i will give you that

and for those of you who said EVENT HORIZON>>FANTASTIC MOVIE. when kids come in asking for a movie for their film fest that will scare the shit outta people, thats the one i reccommend.

CANDYMAN is kinda disturbing but overall fantastic

THE DOORS, if you dont know anything about the doors, it will freak you out. if you do, you will expect most of it.

FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS and WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM. both transferred from books that hunter s. thompson wrote on his life. they are true stories.

THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES>>not too bad, until you get to the end and it says "Based on the true accounts...."

Disturbing?

The play is fairly mundane for modern audiences, and the movie adaption is just poorly done, in my opinion. The last scene especially, with the pies? It was so close to salvaging the whole movie (with the euthanasia take), but the rest just comes off as hokey compared to the theatrical productions.

However, if you were expecting Romeo and Juliet, then it probably came across as quite weird - now, the re-do of the Tempest, that was frigging bizarrely done.

i saw the first one when i was 13...sat through the beating of the monkey and the eating of its brains that followed....but i had to leave the room when they started clubbing the baby seals

MONSTER was pretty disturbing, especially the rape scene.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned KIDS, but that is one messed up movie.
