Arrow bid day!

hey guys i know it's late (after midnight my time), but i wanted to post a few things... both good and bad..
first of all i LOVE MY GAMMIES! all my new sisters are so cute and loving and i had a wonderful time with them today! i am so incredibly happy with my decision!! after some activities and dinner, we all went to see the mandy more movie (walk to remember?) together. even though the movie was pretty cheesy in my opinion, it was the greatest thing to look around and see the theatre filled with over 100 g-phi-b's! i was so proud to be walking around with these amazing women!
then we went back to the house our activities were at and got to become better acquainted with our pledge class and the actives and got PINNED! yay!
but there was one thing that really bothered me and is still bothering me and i hope some of you can offer some advice or something!!
well apparently we have a HUGE rivalry with another sorority on campus. and i guess the members of that sorority will NOT talk to us now that we've affiliated with g-phi-b! THIS WAS THE OTHER SORORITY I PREFFED! i just thought it was SO dumb how girls can be so sweet one night and then straight out rude the next day! why does it have to be so competitive? i dont understand why we can't just work together! ugh it just really bothered me, i dont know why... i just hate it when people dislike someone or judge someone without even knowing them... grr
that just bothered me, but other than that the night was AWESOME and i LOVE everyone in g-phi-b and i can't wait to become more involved! ill write back tomorrow! k byebye xoxo!

Get to know the other sororities pledge class-change starts with you and your new pledge sisters, the older sisters may harbor this rivalry but you and your pledge sisters don't have to. Hopefully with time and graduation of the upperclassmen this rivalry can die out. Good Luck and congrats.

CONGRATS!! I hung out with some Gamma Phi Beta's from Miami U in Ohio on Friday and they were AWESOME!! I am so glad you get to be a part of this fun group! And thanks for such great posts--you made this week so much fun for us too.
As for the rivalry thing, sadly, I think that is everywhere, but I also think it ends up only being a small group that makes it really bad. I know when I was a member going through recruitment, my roomate and I had 3 girls we REALLY wanted for AOTT. All three preffed AOTT and another group, whom we were big rivals with. And only one ended up AOTT. My roomate was absolutely livid that these 2 girls had gone XYZ and made a point of saying this over and over again. While I did wish these girls had been my sisters, I made a point of finding them and telling them congrats, and then spending tons of time with my NEW FAVORITE SISTER, who I had wanted for so long. I think its kind of a glass half empty or half full mentality. You can be upset that you didn't get a girl you wanted and be mean to her whole group or you can be SUPER excited you got the cool girls you did and focus all your energy and keeping them and your sisterhood strong. And you are a new class, you can make this divide less huge. Keep up all your friendships with as many girls as you can and your college life will be so much richer. Even all of us here on greekchat know that little tug when a girl posts that she dropped your house, and most of the time, we don't even know this girls first name or what our GLO is like there. But we do know that knowing each other and learning from each other makes us better people and better sister(and brothers) for everyone. Just be the best GPhiB you can be and everything else will fall into place! Congrats again!

Talking Congrats!

Good for you, and good for Gamma Phi Beta! It sounds like GPB is fortunate to have an awesome gal like you! I'm glad you're enjoying your new sisterhood.

Sorry to hear about the negativity with the other group you preffed. I know with your great attitude and personality, you'll rise above the rivalry. After all, regardless of letters, we're all Greek together!

Thumbs up

Congratulations! I'm so glad you got a bid where you wanted to go. Unfortunately, I feel like I'm an expert on the whole rivalry thing. We have a really bad one with another sorority here on my campus and it's even worse because our school is so small. It is unfortunate that these things happen, but they do. I had prefed my sorority first and theirs second and many of them were sure I was going there. When I didn't (and one of my other pledge sisters) they got nasty and tried to tell me to drop out and join them the next year, etc. Sadly I don't think this is going to get better because it all depends on new member education. I had friends that were friends with me before they joined this chapter, and then all of a sudden they weren't anymore because of the letters I wore. This happens every Bid Day and unfortunately one of our girls and one of theirs got into a fight later that night. The only thing you can do is try to be nice and stop the rivalry. You and your pledge sisters have the power to stop it by trying to improve realtions. It all starts with one, and it can all end with one as well. Good Luck, and I hope your situation gets better!!!

Red face

Hello! Well since I know the other group is Alpha Phi this obviously makes me mad (at them) but also take a step back and really think -have you had a negative incident or is this rumor right now?

Also it is sort of the "one bad apple" scenario...don't let one bad Gamma Phi/Alpha Phi member's interactions label both groups. Think about the new Alpha Phi's that may have heard the same thing on their bid day and had preffed Gamma Phi!

I agree with the new member mixer I think that is a great idea. In four years the entire greek community can be stronger because of YOUR efforts!

Something the AXO's did on your campus that was a really good idea - they made each of their new members take a friend of theirs who had pledged somewhere else out for lunch. It was very Panhellenic and it was an excuse for us to compare our new member experiences.

Thumbs up hmmm

so i had my first day at school and my first day wearing my g phi b shirt! so much fun! it was so rad seeing other g phi bs all over campus and talking to them and stuff (esp. since im new and those are the only people i know right now!!).
but i wanted to update yall on the rivalry thing! there are a few a phis in my classes and they were all really nice to me!! and i even saw one of the girls who was rushing me and she gave me a big hug and wants to hang out! im thinking that everything i heard may have been like one or 2 individuals harboring bitterness - at least i hope so!
i am soooo happy with the gammies! i am so happy i rushed and soo happy for gc - without all the tips and support, i would never have made it this far! i am so thrilled and i really do owe it all to you guys! i may not have even rushed if i hadn't come in contact with all of you amazing women! i promise ill stay on gc for a long time and help all the other rushees out just as you guys have helped me!!! thank you thank you thank you a million times over!
love, linds
xoxo
