((((((HUGS))))))) to princesssluv8 and TexasToast! I'm so sorry to hear this. Both of you should please make note of the two ideas below...they are great ideas!

The only two houses that took spring pledges last year were Sigma Delta Tau and Alpha Phi. For the girls that were released, there are other options.

1. UT Spirit Groups-Texas Spirits, Texas Sweethearts, Texas Wrangler Darlins', Texas Lonestars, Texas Lassos, etc.

2. Networking throughout the year and really getting to know other sorority women and re-rushing next year once you have established friendships. Your number one best odds of being placed in sorority is having someone in the inside "fighting" for you. But this doesn't work alone. It can also work against you. If you create drama your freshman year, or behave in a questionable manner...this can cause you problems.

3. Getting involved in any other organizations that appeal to you.

4. Too many more to list....lol.

There is nothing you can do at this exact point. I know it has to be very disappointing. There is nothing more frustrating than a process where there are no answers....only questions. One thing I will suggest. Find something to do on Tuesday night to keep you occupied. To see girls running around campus squealing, to see decorated doors, etc, is very hard on bruised hearts. Good Luck to all...So sorry it did not work out for you.

((hugs)) to those who were released from recruitment. Please go find other activities or Spirit groups and get involved... I know it is a huge knock on the ego but know that you are a solid student or you wouldn't be at UT in the first place..

That's really not equivalent to having your bed/door decorated. My roommate (whom I had never met prior to move-in) was released from rush and so I had door decorations and she didn't. She was out of the dorm for bid-day so she didn't have to be there when it happened. What should a new member do - not put up sorority decorations all year so she doesn't hurt her roommate's feelings? Please. At some point everyone has to grow up and move on with their own lives.

Yes, it stinks that there are women released from recruitment - and yes, that is terribly painful and confusing for them. But treating everyone who doesn't get what they want in life like special, fragile, snowflakes isn't the answer.

Plus, door decs play another role if you have a big pledge class, and don't meet everyone right away...you see a door dec in your dorm and you are like "wow! you're an XYZ too? I'm so-and-so."

Also: if the CPH has properly set total (hahaha) after FR, and there are groups that can take a few more girls, having a roommate in one of those chapters can only work in your favor. Many times, COB happens under the table, so to speak, where a couple of awesome women just quietly get added to a pledge class.

ETA: My last statement is NOT specific to UT. I have no idea if chapters are taking women there.

Yes, thanks for saying this as well. I couldn't figure out how to say it nicely. I remember the small thrill I got after bid day when I would see an anchor on another sister's door.

Thank you.
Quota will not be set until panhellenic sees how many girls attend pref parties. Some girls might drop out once the see their schedules..hopefully not, but it happens. I am going to go out on a limb and guess between 60-70.

(((hugs))) to those of you who were released. There really are no words that any of us can say that will make you feel better today..however, it will get better.
As Pinapple said, you may have a chance to rush again as a sophomore. UT has a sophomore quota, although not all of the chapters utilize it. The best advice if you really want to be in a sorority, is to make as many connections with other girls as you can this year. I have personally seen a case where a girl had a very bad experience her freshman year because she knew literally no one and had no one pulling for her. She went out and met tons of girls and had a great rush the next year. There is no guarantee..however, it can happen..keep that in mind.

Yes, it's a lesson in being a grown-up to take a deep breath and be happy for your new friend. But I think it is asking too much of 17- or 18-year-old releasees to literally have sorority welcomes thrown in their faces every time they enter their own homes. If a new member's roommate was cut, her new sisters can surprise her with chair decorations at a chapter meeting or something.

There is really no way this happens. When a house receives their bid list, a group of pre-assigned actives divides up into groups (per dorm) and starts to get ready to head out on door decoration duty while other actives pick up the PNMs and get them to the house. Chapter ABC would have no idea if PNM #32s roommate 1) Got a bid to somewhere 2) Got released from recruitment 3) Even signed up for recruitment 4) Hated sorority girls. Because of this the trend and tradition of door decoration will continue.

thanks for the support. I'm sophomore who hadn't rushed as a freshman, so I'm fairly certain my chance is over. I'm not going through this again, especially not as a junior. It just sucks because at most other schools, I wouldnt be sitting around crying during the pref round.

I am hoping to twist the arm of my pnm - it would be a story worth hearing, I'm sure - involving medical intervention and laryngitis!
