Being "class favorite" does not mean you are sorority material nor that the sororities should love you. They aren't going to say "OMGZZ, you were class favorite?? You're in!"

I would not throw a senior superlative around like it's an achievement lol

DeltaIVA, it sounds like YOU weren't ready the competitiveness for UT recruitment. Trust me, I've been where you once were in thinking my race played a factor but that didn't stop me from finding my niche. It sounds like you expected them to give you a bid because you're a "hot commodity". In reality you (and those other Indian girls in recruitment with you) were probably never handed rejection like this and since you haven't you use the only thing YOU SEE that makes you different. You weren't there for Membership voting, but I guarantee that no chapter votes a person "no" based on race.

Think about it this way, what if you HAD received a bid to your "dream chapter," would you have pinned it on your race? Probably not, because in this case you got what you wanted. Would we hear you playing the race card? Would you come on here warning minority PNM's about the woes of rushing? Again, Probably not.

So how many recs did you and your friends have? I've seen no discussion of that - and believe me, at UT,you need recs.

Here's one: many girls get cut early during competitive recruitments. You might be a unique snowflake at your high school, but at a big college you're just as unique as everyone else, and when "everyone else" has recs at every sorority, connections, a better GPA, etc. you CAN get lost in the bunch.

Saying you got cut because of your race is a big leap and big assumption to make. And you. Do not. Know.

Just to add onto the original topic of this thread... Kappa Kappa Gamma at UT has an Asian in their pledge class this year, and they are considered one of the "big 6" sororities. Granted this is probably the first Asian that Texas Kappa or any PKT sorority has ever pledged, it is nice to know that the "big 6" is beginning to become more accepting of minorities. Hope your recruitment went well!

Some of these posters assume GLO groups at some schools are "lily white." Yes, change is gradual, but maybe before you assume, take a look at the yearbooks at some of these schools and look at the pictures and names. Auburn was one of the schools mentioned. Before you make an uninformed judgement, pick up a Glom (yearbook). Any baby steps forward are steps in the right direction. Not wanting to join a "middle or lower tier" sorority is certainly your choice, but it does limit your choices. Maybe there should be a question on the recruitment form to check off the groups you are too good for.

Awhile back I wrote my recruitment story about being Jewish, USC and recruitment. At the time that I rushed Jewish women could only join a Jewish house. Last year I wrote about my daughter who rushed at the same university. She joined a house that didn't take Jews when I went through. In her pledge class are Blacks, Asians, Jews, and Christians. There is at least one Muslim in the house.

When we purchased our home I read the original CC&Rs: (restrictions as to who could buy in this neighborhood): No Asians, Hispanics, Negroes, people of the Hebrew faith (that would be us). And Negro servants were not allowed to sleepover within city limits. Obviously no one had paid attention to that for years. When I was growing up, in the same neighborhood it was 90& plus white (mostly Jewish) a few Asians, and a few Black entertainers.

Now, my kids were minorities in the same school I went to not that long ago. Our street has people of all races, religions, and ethnic backgrounds. Life changes, and to be cliche, be that change. Sometimes the change will be a year later than you want it to be, but please don't blame your background for your exclusion. Get into the mix that is your school and change will come. It is hard to exclude people you know. It is the people that you know in abstract that are easy to exclude.

(Please know that I used the word Negro as it was used in the historical papers!!!!! I should have used quotes, but didn't. OMG,, If I have offended anyone by that useage...sorry.)
