The ones that conjure up bad memories for me (and there were multiple mean kids named these):

80s: Chad, Jason, Shane
90s: Dakota, Dustin
now: Austin, Jaden

(And let me say that there were SIX Austins who lived in in-school suspension at our school last year)
Wayne! Especially as a middle name. It seems to be the name of choice for Felons, particularly in North Carolina

Got this in an e-mail, so I don't know if it's true or not. I thought it was funny but sad (if true).

OKAY. How would you pronounce this child's name: . . .
"Le-a" ???

Leah?? NO. Lee-A?? NOPE. Lay-ah?? NO. Lei?? NO!!! Guess again.

It's pronounced "Ledasha." Oh, yes . . . you read it right.

This child attends a school in Livingston Parish, LA. Her mother is irate because everyone is getting her name wrong. SO, if you see something come across your desk like this, please remember to pronounce it correctly. When the mother was asked about the pronunciation of the name, she said, "The dash don't be silent."

The sad part is that it probably is true.

I knew a girl named "Alyssa" but it was pronounced "Alisha." And if you got it wrong, she'd get mad. I wanted to tell her she should be mad at her mama for spelling it that way, but anyway....

I know somebody named Fecie. Yes, it's pronounced like what you think.

Uh... wow... my same friend that had Xenophobe in her class also mentioned "Le-a." She is indeed a teacher in rural Louisiana. Not sure, though, if that child was in her class or she heard through the Teach for America grapevine.

Small world.

I have another good one, also from a chapter sister living in Louisiana, but in med school. At LSU Medical Center, there was a baby born recently named Knowandasheliv. You got me on pronunciation. I'm guessing "No-Wanda-Sha-leve"???

Don't remember if I shared this or not...

One of my high school teachers used to work as a nurse and she told us about a lady who named her son Orangelo. (sp?) Anyway, poor kid was named for his mom's orange JELLO in the hospital.

Anyone anti-Emily around here??? Just curious since it seems like there are so many of us now.

I think the Orangelo and Lemongelo stories are urban myths, personally.

But if it's true....haaaaaaaaaaa

I have heard that one SO many times by people claiming their mom or aunt saw these babies in person. In places all over America. It's bullhockey.

Snopes has a great discussion on how many of these names are based on racist assumptions:

After 50 some odd days of class, I'd like to add Alissa to the list. Theres a few others that might get added to the list, but so far Alissa is it.

I tutored 1st graders in reading for a few weeks in August, and while these little girls were VERY sweet, I would never name my kids after them because I really think these sound like stripper names or something:

*Krystal
*Brandi
*Destinyrae
*Shayla
*Shawnna
*Lexi (not short for anything, just Lexi)
*Dallas
*Starlynne

My first grandchild is due next month and she'll have the same first and middle names as the worst girl I've taught all year. I like the names but I've told my daughter that I will absolutely have to call the baby by her middle name so that bad memories won't swamp me every time I say her first name.

Have I put Andrew on my list of never-ever names? Allow me to do that if I haven't.

The wonderful world of working in an elementary school has ruined several names for me so far, but the one most noteworthy is Logan. It used to be one of my favorite boy names, but it's ruined. RUINED.
