Agreed...considering I work on campus and I'm an adviser, I know that there is "talk" but it's not official. Plus like aopirose said there would have to be a vote and the NPC delegates for the current NPC groups would have to know about it.

I could totally see one new chapter coming and if they can survive then they would take on the challenge of building a new house. I just think that right now it's all pure speculation and I don't think our Greek Life Office would be so brazen as to allow a new sorority to come onto campus without a proper Panhellenic Vote and following the proper steps of expansion.

Now I have heard talk about a new fraternity coming onto campus in 2009 but I mean that's a totally different story!

Don't know anything about LSU or GA, they might be worse than Auburn....of course there are so many factors that go into whether or not rush is "brutal," e.g., did the pnm effectively "cut herself" out of rush....that is a whole nother can of worms!
I think an important factor in determining whether a campus is "brutal" is by the number/percent of women released from recruitment (how many cut from all chapters NOT how many drop out). If there are a lot of women being cross-released (for seemingly "no reason", not for grades), that's a powerful argument for extension.

OleMissGlitter, you seem to have the inside edge at Ole Miss. One thing that bothered me through this whole process is that Panhellenic NEVER updated their website from the year before. The rush dates posted were from 2006. I had someone who wanted to write a rec for my daughter (just one out of the blue) that had checked on the website and thought that rush was not until this week. IFC updated theirs, but not Panhellenic. A lot of people depend upon websites for up to date information. Could you please pass this along to make sure they keep it updated for next year.

As an aside, it would be great for all the houses on all campuses to do like-wise. Alums do cruise these sites and when it comes to requesting money it is nice to be able to go and see what the chapter has on their websites. Just a thought.

Oh Trust me GatorDG websites that aren't updated drive me crazy! I don't know why the Greek Life website wasn't updated either. I know they did hire a new Asst. Dean of Students late last spring so that might have been part of the problem, you know with transitioning and things.

I will say that most of the sororities redid their websites last spring. I know Theta, AOII, KD, Kappa, DG, Phi Mu, and Tri Delta updated their sites for this fall. For AOII it has been imperative the chapter keep their website updated because of the Capital Campaign going on for their new addition that was finished this fall 2007. We want to keep our alumnae updated on everything that's going on!

I thought the houses did a great job on keeping their websites up to date. The KD's even had a little section about recruitment on their Home Page. That was where I got some of the information that I was looking for regarding mandatory events. Congratulations to them all for doing such a great job.

You are right about the need for an up-to-date site when requesting $$$$. Alums always like to know where the money is going.

My son's fraternity actually had a section on theirs for parents. That was nice, especially if greek life is new to the family or when your child is in a school far from home.

i have a question for anyone who may be able to help. my daughter went through rush this fall and just doesn't feel comfortable in the house that she is in. she is talking about rushing next fall---can she do that. if so is rushing for sophomores even more difficult. from what i've heard some houses automatically cut them. i'd appreciate any help. thanks.

She can go through rush again next fall as long as she doesn't initiate into her current sorority. Judging from what I've read here, sophomores have received bids in the past, so we know that it's not impossible. However, several other factors might play a role should she decide to drop and go through rush again next year -- the fact that she dropped might be a be big one. Plus, you never know what'll happen between now and Fall 2008.

Encourage her to stick it out. She's going to have to wait a year to go through rush again anyway. If she still feels the same way just before Initiation, drop.

There are several Ole Miss advisors/current sorority members who frequent here. They'd know best.

I have to agree with OTW. Encourage her to stick it out and get involved with the sorority. Its only been a few weeks and like anything else friendships aren't instant, so give it some time. If she feels the same way by the time Initiation rolls around, then she could drop and re-rush, so long as she doesn't initiate. If she does drop and decides to re-rush, she WILL have a more difficult time getting in a sorority than she did this year, so keep that in mind. Best of luck to you and your daughter.

Ole Miss Phi Mu and OTW said it perfectly....it takes time to get settled into a sorority.

Thank you so much for all your input it has definitely helped, but I have a few more questions. I'm sorry to bother you guys again, but having never been in a sorority myself I am completely clueless to the whole process.
1. say that she does decide to drop does that sort of put a "black mark" on her during the recruitment process
2. all of her good friends are in different sororities does that help her chances at all

1. Having pledged another sorority may affect her chances. No one can really tell you with any certainty that it will/won't, but it is a possibility. At Ole Miss, your best shot at recruitment is typically your freshman year, so her chances of getting a bid will decrease a bit if she rushes next year. It is possible, but she will experience heavier cuts in the beginning because of her class standing.

2. Having good friends in a sorority doesn't guarantee a better chance at getting a bid there, especially at a school like Ole Miss where there are SO many girls rushing.

In my opinion, she should stick it out with her current sorority. If she drops out and rushes again next year, her chances of getting a bid won't be the same as they were this year.
