If it's hot outside, dress weather appropriately and you won't sweat profusely.

What about a community service event, ie serving food at a soup kitchen or helping out at a cancer walk, or AIDS walk???? Would you wear letters with sneakers for that type of thing???

My dad has a pair of those.
My dad has THE WORST taste in shoes. EVERY PAIR except his white tennis shoes and his wing tips are butt ugly.

I golf in Lacoste polos. I play tennis in them. I sweat then.

Classic doesn't always means snazzy.

*We aren't allowed to wear our letters with any sort of workout attire. This also includes bags.
* We're discouraged from looking unresentable AT ANY TIME (with or without letters). It's just not a good idea, but not something you can get in trouble for. BUT WE ARE NOT permitted to wear letters while looking unpresentable. You can be sent to standards. Unpresentable usually refers to not showered, or showered with wet hair in a ponytail, no makeup, and you basically did not take the time to make yourself look halfway decent.
*In general, we're supposed to display apppropriate behavior when wearing letters. No swearing, being bitchy to the Starbucks guy, walking in a half hour late to class and then sleeping through it, etc.

Out of curiosity: Does this rule apply to everyone or just ugly women who need makeup and dolling up to look pretty?

Most people who can really afford Lacoste polos have traditionally used them to golf or play tennis in. The students at my undergrad would have holes and stains in their high priced clothes. Designer clothes aren't a big deal to everyone and Lacoste may not really be "designer clothing," anyway.

That's insane. Does anybody question these ridiculous "rules" or do you just accept them?

So very true. You see this all the time here in NYC. It's just not a big deal for some folks.

What exactly is "work out attire?" Because the Tri-Sigma store seems to sell t-shirts, sweatshirts, golf shirts, etc

Hhaha, the problem with always handing letters down is that you get some that are straight out of the 80's, and some are seriously stained. Those letters get worn to bed. Doesn't make me any less proud that theyre my letters, hell, I'm wearing them in my SLEEP! Butttt...they're not exactly my "welcome to newspaper practicum, i'm the photo editor" letters.
I'm sure some poor new member will say that next year when I hand down the lemon yellow/navy/maroon flower print ones I have now. (These letters go down in infamy as the letters that I wore when I woke up 2 minutes before my drawing midterm, ran to the building in my PJ's, Flip flops, letter shirt and bandana, was still on time...and then forgot that it was midterm day...only to get the highest score of both sessions on the test!! They're good luck letters...I now wear them the night before every exam).
I wear my letter hoodies to the gym all the time...I actually wear them to my triathlons too! I met an ATO and a Pi Phi (she had a recruitment shirt on) at my last race this way.
And sneakers are ladylike! I'll be buggered if I'm not still a lady at mile 26 of my marathon (to which I plan to wear letters). I'm sure a stumbling athlete on stilts isn't any better than cruising around in sneakers feeling confident.
Generally, I'm proud to be a Tau Delta, and I want people to see my letters always.

Polo shirts and boat shoes, regardless of designer or price, are casual wear, though. I don't think they are any more fancy than a sweatshirt or tennis shoes and are appropriate for all the same places- they are just a slightly more polished looking option.
