Surgery Treats Dog's Five-Legged Problem

Email this Story

Nov 25, 10:43 AM (ET)

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A five-legged dog discovered near a state park has undergone successful surgery to remove two of his legs.

During a 2 1/2-hour operation Monday morning, a veterinary surgeon removed the dog's back two left legs, which resulted from an extremely rare genetic anomaly.

The Maltese-and-terrier mix named Popcorn created quite a stir in the local dog-lover community when she was found near Umstead State Park, northwest of Raleigh. Experts said it was unheard of for such an animal to live long past birth.

Popcorn is believed to be between 9 months and a year old.

The extra, or supernumerary, leg was removed because it was hampering the dog's movement. The more fully developed leg was also removed because it was rotated at a 90-degree angle, rendering it useless as well.

Dr. Rebecca Tudor, who performed the amputations with an assistant, said Popcorn faced severe arthritis without the surgery. Because of the abnormalities, surgery took longer than expected, she said.

Woman Knocked Unconscious While Shopping
2 hours, 37 minutes ago Add U.S. National - AP to My Yahoo!

ORANGE CITY, Fla. - A mob of shoppers rushing for a sale on DVD players trampled the first woman in line and knocked her unconscious as they scrambled for the shelves at a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Patricia VanLester had her eye on a $29 DVD player, but when the siren blared at 6 a.m. Friday announcing the start to the post-Thanksgiving sale, the 41-year-old was knocked to the ground by the frenzy of shoppers behind her.

"She got pushed down, and they walked over her like a herd of elephants," said VanLester's sister, Linda Ellzey. "I told them, `Stop stepping on my sister! She's on the ground!'"

Ellzey said some shoppers tried to help VanLester, and one employee helped Ellzey reach her sister, but most people just continued their rush for deals.

"All they cared about was a stupid DVD player," she said Saturday.

Paramedics called to the store found VanLester unconscious on top of a DVD player, surrounded by shoppers seemingly oblivious to her, said Mark O'Keefe, a spokesman for EVAC Ambulance.

She was flown to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where doctors told the family VanLester had a seizure after she was knocked down and would likely remain hospitalized through the weekend, Ellzey said. Hospital officials said Saturday they did not have any information on her condition.

"She's all black and blue," Ellzey said. "Patty doesn't remember anything. She still can't believe it all happened."

Ellzey said Wal-Mart officials called later Friday to ask about her sister, and the store apologized and offered to put a DVD player on hold for her.

Wal-Mart Stores spokeswoman Karen Burk said she had never heard of a such a melee during a sale.

"We are very disappointed this happened," Burk said. "We want her to come back as a shopper."

Ok, I was at Wal-Mart

I accompanied my father to Wal-mart at 5:15 on Friday morning. He wanted to buy my nephew the $500 HP computer (which was a great deal btw). However, I had a very different experience. First, of all, I bypassed the crowd and went to a frozen food aisle along with four other waiting people. When 6am came, the rope surrounding the sale item was cut and the only person I came in physical contact with was my father (we dumped into each other). We walked up, grabbed the computer, put it in the cart and walked right up to a cash register. It took all of five minutes.

As Cedric the Entertainer said, " I wish a M$%#%# would..."

or as a fellow aisle waiter stated, I told the people near me last year, if you push me, I will kill you! I'm very serious."

cracked me up!!!

ETA: Those people are hardcore...why did I see people with walkie talkies. They dispatched people in their groups to different sections of the store. I mean really, I'm a shopper and I take it very seriously...but they were out of control. I think they missed their calling. We need them in the military. LOL

That's something else

I wasn't at Wal-Mart yesterday. I was at Off Fifth, the Saks outlet, in S.D. and had to wait 90 minutes to check out. The Off Fifth crowd didn't trample people. They're more, err, refined.

I am so sick of hearing about that $29 dvd player. One of my friends was excited about it. I told her that it probably runs like a $29 dvd player. It is sad that this lady got trampled over something so material. But I am trying to avoid walmart at all cost during normal hours. I went out on tuesday and bought all the little things that i would need for a while

They couldn't at least give her the DVD player for free?

Um, well...I was told it was a piece of crap! The same lady who threatened the shoppers last year, said that everyone she knew who bought one last year returned them in two weeks because they broke.

well, what do you expect???

@Soror Steeltrap...I try to keep it classy regardless of my surroundings. Even in Walmart...I maintained it...Sorry, I'm not running...or hitting...or doing anything thing of that nature for an item. Now..a man...maybe!!!

Just jokes/

Thumbs down

i heard at some targets down south, dvd players that were $29 sold out in the first fifteen minutes of the store opening.
this is exactly why i am glad my family is doing christmas differently this year. we are getting each other ONE presents and that is all. other stuff that we want can be bought by ourselves. store get way too ridiculous at christmas time. my life is more important than getting trampled on for sometimes like a shirt or a video game.

You beat me to the punch. That's the least they could do, dag. People are so triflin, its not even funny. I mean, is a friggin DVD player THAT important that you'd actually push and shove and walk over people to get one? That's why I don't like the gift giving portion of Christmas, folks just get straight supid.

I vowed I would never shop during the Wal-Mart after Thanksgiving Sale ever again! I went two years ago for a computer and a tv and it scarred me. Me and my family got there at like 4:30 thinking we would be the first in line. And to our surprise, the line was wrapped around the store. This was before it became SuperWalMart so the doors were closed. I felt so bad for the man with the key because he almost got rushed. My cousin was with me and she was pregnant at the time. She had to keep her arms over her stomach the whole time b/c people were pushing and shoving. It was ridiculous. Never again.

The news cameras were at the K-Mart (or Wal-Mart one) and aired a live fight between women who fought to keep another woman from skipping. In the mean time, all of the others shoppers walked in as the 3 ladies continued to fight. Pretty lame!
