Its great to see that you guys are doing well. My friend is really excited about being a beta pledge this coming year. It looks like you are going to have a very strong pledge class. Good luck in everything!

So, after catching up on this thread, I have to add my congrats along with everyone else's.
I haven't had the pleasure of seeing a recruitment like you've described it, mostly b/c the men's GLO stories I've heard always involved keg parties and bar nights. And if that's the way they choose to conduct themselves, fine.
The word that comes to mind when reading your story? Class. Thank you for dispelling some of my preconceptions of fraternity recruitment. Sounds like your chapter will have a stellar year with stellar new members.

Beta,
Let me just express to you how impressed I am with your organization. The amount of dedication and hard work it takes to do what you all do during summer is very inspiring! Congrats on the new guys, and hopefully you can fill your pledge class!

Okay, as I said yesterday, confusion and lots of decisions abound...
Here's the way it stands right now.
Yesterday we got the bid card of a guy who we knew was going to sign. So officially we stand at 17.
The guy from KC, he is confirmed to sign. So that's 18.
One of the guys that no one had heard from in forever called yesterday and told us he is going to sign. #19.
A kid that only the rush chairs met with, because he was so busy this summer, also gave confirmation that he will sign. His cousin is former president of Farmhouse, and another one of my firends so I hope he's as cool as his cousin was. #20.
The two guys from Omaha, our rush chairs got a little too excited about and said that they were confirmed to sign. Not true. But we think that we have a good chance with those guys.
We also have rushee #5 from that same Lincoln HS who has a card. He wants to check out the guys from some other houses first, but we think that we hold the edge for now.
That gives one more guy, a legacy, who no one knows about. He has been an ass to rush chairs all summer, not returning phone calls, cancelling meetings a half hour before they start (when the rush chairs have driven an hour and a half). The rush chairs aren't even sure if they will give him another card to sign b/c of his actions (Bid cards must be signed within two weeks of the rushee getting them, otherwise they need a new card). I'd personally like to get, because 1) he is a legacy, and since we decided to give a bid, we should try to get him, and 2) he is good friends with one of my good friends, and she has had nothing but great things to say about him.
Finally, in dissappointing news, my pledge dad's little brother decided to go Farmhouse. He felt more comfortable with the guys there apparently. One of Farmhouse's rush chairs was from his hometown, and one of his best friends went there as well. (the other joined us). His older brother really wasn't pushing him one way or the other b/c he wanted it to be his decision. I think a lot of guys in our house are pretty upset about losing him b/c he was a cool guy.
So we're down to 4 left. Our max pledge class will be 24 with 4-5 living out. Keep your fingers crossed that we land them all.

that is sooo awesome! congrats! at my school, fraternity rush was one week of open houses....and i think one invite only party. this process seems like a much better way to get to know the guys. of course, we had sophomore deferment, so rush was really all through freshmen year....but i digress. i think you have done a great job!!! i am keeping my fingers crossed so that you get those last 4 guys!

There is a very small and underutilized formal rush during the first weekend before classes. First day is usually thrusday, and has open houses, the other days are invites, but I think that bids can be offered after thursday. Last year I think only 25 guys went through and less than 10 were signed.
There is a winter formal recruitment process, but that has very uneven results year to year. Last year the plan was to have every freshman guy in the dorms get a phone call, and that never happened, resulting in only 7 guys rushing.
My chapter since our reorganization in 1996 has not participated at all in Winter rush. The main reason being available space in the chapter house, as well as we would rather have larger pledge classes that stick together for the whole year, rather than 2 smaller pledge classes. Plus it makes it easier for the rush chairs and pledge ed to develop their programming and strategies when they have all of 2nd semester available for work to get accomplished.

Congrats and good luck getting the rest of the guys! It sounds like an awsome way to get to know the guys and it's great that they get to know there pledge brothers before pledging starts!

you guys are really impressive! You seem to know exactly what you're doing and are very well organized. I never knew so much went into guys rush! good luck with those other floaters
p.s. I met my first Beta guy a couple of weekends ago (friend of a friend at GA Tech), he was such a gentleman and really gave me a great first impression of your organization.

I love this thread! It has been so much fun watching your summer rush become so successful. I wish I was nearby and could meet you guys, the Betas seem like a great bunch of guys! There are so many frats that give the rest a bad name, but its groups like yours that make the system worthwhile. Good luck on the rest of the summer!

Not to be a total ignoramous, but we don't have the term "pledge dad" out here...or at least at my university. What is it? Like a pledge educator? your big bro? Thanks in advance for not thinking I'm an idiot.

I would think it is the pledge educator...the same way the girls are sometimes referred to as a pledge mom.

Actually it would be the same as a Big Brother...I think UNL tradition has always been to call littles as either daughters or sons (obviously dependent upon whether youre in a sorority or fraternity) as I know all my friends in sororities talk about their Pledge Babies...
We do have a separate Pledge Ed, but that's a completely different type of relationship. you can see my dissappointment in not having my pledge dad's little brother sign to our house.

We do pledge moms and pledge daughters in place of "big sister/little sister" too. I'm not sure if this is campus-wide or just our chapter though . . . I should check around. I know some of the fraternities do dad/son instead of big brother/little brother too.

Waiting on bid cards
Okay, first rush news in a while. I told you it was going to slow to a trickle.
Got the bid card from the guys we hadn't heard from in a while, came in the mail so that is pledge #18!
The guy from KC we're just waiting on his card. Also waiting for the bid card from the guy who's cousin was in Farmhouse.
We got word from pledge #5 from that same Lincoln HS as the others that he is going to sign. I'm happy with his decision because he was truthful in telling us that he liked us, but he wanted to make check otu the guys in the other houses. I can respect that and it makes it all that much more special when he decides to sign with us, knowing that he's checked everyone else out.
The two guys from Omaha are down to us and one other house, and one seems pretty ready to sign with us, but the other is also taking his time. They told me they were going to sign together, so it's a good sign, but we'll see how it plays out...keep your fingers crossed.
Finally there's the legacy no one knows about...I have no idea how that will play out. Hopefully we get him, b/c like I said earlier one of my best friends has known him since he was born and she says great things about him.
