Wareagle - I know from talking with daughter that this has been an emotionally draining experience and I'm sorry things didn't turn out the way you had hoped. BUT - Auburn has so many great ways to get involved. Tiger Tuesdays is a great group to be involved in. Like others have said, after you think about it, maybe COB would be something to consider as well.

Good luck in whatever you decide - Auburn is fortunate to have YOU!

Thanks for posting that about the recs GAmomof2.... I've been so distraught over this - We were counting on one family friend (a teacher) who promised to get many different recs for my daughter. AFTER rush began - I e-mailed her and discovered she did not follow through with any (except for her own sorority).... So your post has made me feel better. What will be will be...
So sorry that happened to your daughter.

But for the sake of all PNMs at competitive schools, both now and into the future, I want to reiterate what I said above:

A positive recommendation WILL NOT prevent a PNM from being cut in any given round. It WILL only prevent her from being cut for the reason of NOT having one at all.

Auburn HAS had some COR opportunities in past years. So I'd encourage PNMs to inquire about them after FR is over.

I will say though, that NOT every chapter participates and those who do may have limited spots available. If one were to show interest in COR, they'd need to be open to considering the chapters participating.

A good friend of mine always does recs for girls that I know for her sorority, and she has been frustrated in the past few years because her rec girls seem to never make it past first round at the school she attended. She fired off an e-mail to the chapter today because out of 6 recs she wrote for very smart, cute girls, none made it back to 2nd round. The chapter advisor responded that at this particular campus where numbers going through recruitment are huge, her best bet is to bring the girls by the previous spring and introduce them to some members if she wants them to have a chance of being invited back. Think that goes along with the other comments about recs not meaning what they used to.

^^^The thing with recs is that EVERYONE has them. When everyone has it, it becomes a standard thing, not something that makes you stand out.

Let's say a sorority has a policy stating that everyone with a rec comes back to 2nd round. (Disclaimer: I don't KNOW any sorority policies except my own.)

If you go to a small school where like 4 girls have recs, that policy is a huge deal. It's no problem to give 4 women those courtesies.

However, at a BIG school where all 1200 women have recs and someone has to be cut, everyone can't be afforded that courtesy.

Oh, Lavalier.

There's some great advice for released PNMs earlier on this thread and I hope that y'all will read it if she still wants to be Greek. Last year we had 2 released PNMs on GC who signed up for informal recruitment immediately and they ended up with bids. There were 2 the year before that.

Stay strong!

Lavalier & Wareagle,

I'm very sorry! I know this week was alot of work and stress not to have the ending you planned. I wasn't Greek in college and had an amazing experience. AU is such a great, friendly environment with so many great groups to get involved with.

I'm so very sorry wareagle and lavaliere. I was hoping for a happy ending for everyone on here. Chin up, put your name in for informal (if desired), and we'll continue to keep fingers crossed! Bottom line is that Auburn is wonderful school, and they will find their niche somewhere, even if it's not in greek life.

Has anyone heard how it's going for the chapters? Are girls dropping with chapters left because they aren't happy with who they have? We've heard none of that here, but the mothers in this thread seem to be smart and practical enough to have counseled against that sort of thing. I sure hope that's not happening when we know of at least 2 girls who would be livid to find out some ungrateful hag took their spot. (too harsh?)

eta/ and again, I'm so sorry for this outcome. Please keep in touch about what your daughter decides to do now.

lavalier, i am so sorry that your daughter was released. i hope that she will feel better soon(and you too). might i suggest that you drive to auburn in a week of two for a little retail therapy? when my college boyfriend and i broke up, my mother arrived the following
Saturday and took me out to lunch and shopping-it really helped!

Lavalier, I'm really sorry! I can imagine that it's been a very stressful and agonizing time, and your daughter seems like a really sweet girl! There's more than just greek life at AU. I agree with FuturePNMMom. The people at AU are arguably the most friendly in the entire country, and there are literally HUNDREDS of activities to be involved in. No doubt she'll find her niche somewhere, and who knows? Perhaps she might give it another try next year! In the meantime, organizations/clubs such as IMPACT and Tiger Tuesdays are GREAT ways to get involved, and I'm certainly looking to be involved in such a club aside from my pledging a Fraternity.

Good luck to your daughter and War Eagle!
