AND THAT MAKES ME WONDER.
WHY GREEK LETTERS ARE USED FOR SUCH PURPOSES?
I AM NOT AGRESSIVE, I AM JUST A GIRL FROM ATHENS WHO ALWAYS WONDERED ABOUT THIS...

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!
A very good question. I am sure we have a few members of Greek descent, but these are in the minority, and they are here for their shared membership or interest in fraternity or sorority life.

Latin and Greek are the classic languages of academia. The use of Greek letters in North American-based student organizations started over 200 years ago with Phi Beta Kappa, which used Greek letters to hide their secret name. Other organizations developed (fraternity and sorority are actually words derived from Latin), but eventually (with a few exceptions) they followed this model of Phi Beta Kappa by giving their organizations Greek titles to hide a secret meaning from non members.

Favorite Questions...

My favorite question:

Hi everyone. I just saw the Spike Lee movie "School Daze". Can
someone from one of the NPHC orgs post here and tell me if the movie
is accurate?

Next one:

Hi everyone. I just read the book "Pledged". Is it true that
sororities have secret hand signals that they use during rush, and if
so, what are they?

I wonder the same thing....my cousin went to East Tennessee State University and all of the sororities there have suites and all of the fraternities have houses....it's always been like that.

She was always told that was the reason.

Anyone have thoughts on this?
