NFL = Censorship
Chasez Out of Pro Bowl, Rips NFL

By Sarah Hall
Hey, Justin, why you gonna do JC like that?
Thanks to the controversy caused by the Justin Timberlake-Janet Jackson Boobgate scandal, the NFL has decided to cancel a halftime performance by Timberlake's fellow 'N Syncer, JC Chasez (news), NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed to E!
Chasez had initially planned to perform "Some Girls (Dance with Women)," a song from his upcoming solo album, during halftime of the NFL Pro Bowl this weekend.
The singer said in a statement that the NFL expressed concern over some of his lyrics, and asked him to perform "Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)" instead.
The song was featured on the soundtrack for 2002's Drumline--a film that was rated a staid PG-13.
But those lyrics, too, caused NFL hackles to rise, as they included the words "horny" and "naughty"--words that Chasez said he reluctantly agreed to change.
However, still smarting from the R-rated Super Bowl festivities, the NFL decided to steer clear of any potential for further embarrassment.
"We thought it was over the top," McCarthy told TelevisionWeek.com. "It was because of the song, and how we believed it was going to be choreographed. We wanted to go in a different direction."
McCarthy said that Chasez had not been holding rehearsals at the Pro Bowl. As a result, the NFL made a preemptive strike, barring any possible wardrobe malfunctions from the halftime show.
Instead, spectators have the opportunity to get lei'd, in a Hawaii-themed celebration of the Pro Bowl's 25th year in the Aloha State. Entertainment will feature hula dancers, drummers, conch shell blowers and local singers.
The NFL offered Chasez the consolation prize of performing the national anthem before the game, which he initially agreed to do. But on Thursday he changed his mind.
He released a statement attacking the league's leadership, saying it has "clearly become so disoriented it has reduced itself to bashing me and my music to divert attention from the fact that the NFL screwed up at the Super Bowl."
Chasez said he had enjoyed a positive relationship with the league in the past, but felt "mistreated" after being dropped.
"While I agree the mishap at the Super Bowl was a huge mistake, the NFL's shallow effort to portray my music as sexually indecent brings to mind another era when innocent artists were smeared with a broad brush by insecure but powerful people," Chasez stated. "That's not the America I love. Nor is this the NFL I love. I'll sing the national anthem anytime, anywhere, but not for this NFL."
It's not like the lost gig is leaving Chasez with a lot of free time on his hands--the singer has a slew of upcoming television performances scheduled to promote his debut solo album, Schizophrenic, due out Feb. 24.
***Anyone get the feeling the NFL is being run my hyper-sensitive arch-conservatives?!!*** (See the Playmakers Thread)
I know Janet made a bad and inappropriate choice, but PULEEZE!! JC CHASEZ?!!

LAWSUIT
Janet, Justin Sued over Boobgate
Fri Feb 6, 2:00 AM ET
By Sarah Hall
Who knew that a slip of the nipple could cause serious injury to millions?
After catching a glimpse of Janet Jackson's mammary during the Super Bowl halftime show, a Tennessee woman filed a proposed class action lawsuit Wednesday, naming Jackson, Justin Timberlake, MTV, CBS and Viacom as defendants.
Terri Carlin filed her suit "on behalf of all Americans who watched the Super Bowl," blaming Jackson and Timberlake for causing her and millions of other unsuspecting viewers "to suffer outrage, anger, embarrassment and serious injury."
(The full legal documents can be found online at The Smoking Gun.)
The suit does not specify exactly what kind of injury was incurred; however damages sought could add up to billions. Though no figure is given in the suit, Carlin indicates that punitive damages should not exceed the combined gross revenues of all defendants over the last three years.
Apologies from Jackson apparently did nothing to soothe Carlin's wounded morality, nor did denials from the networks and Timberlake of any prior knowledge of the stunt that resulted in the infamous wardrobe malfunction.
"Families have an expectation that they can trust companies and individuals such as the defendants not to expose families to sexually explicit conduct during broadcasts of prime time events such as the Super Bowl," Carlin's suit snipes.
Carlin further accuses the networks of not having a "sufficient broadcast delay" in place to prevent unexpected mishaps like Boobgate 2004.
It seems the networks agree with her to some extent--a gun shy CBS has announced plans to air the Grammys (news - web sites) on an unprecedented five-minute delay Sunday, presumably to protect viewers from the hijinks of wacky entertainers.
ABC may follow suit by running the Feb. 29 broadcast of the Academy Awards (news - web sites) on its first-ever delay, albeit a mere five seconds. And NBC decided to edit out a glimpse of an elderly woman's breast from Thursday's episode of ER.
In other Jackson-flash fallout, Michael's sis will no longer be attending the 2004 Grammys, her rep Stephen Huvane confirmed to E!
Jackson was originally scheduled to present an award to Luther Vandross (news), but after the ailing crooner confirmed his no-show status, she was told her services were no longer needed, according to Grammy production sources.
Timberlake, who claimed to be "shocked and appalled" by the breast-baring bodice rip, is still slated to perform at the Grammys.
Meanwhile, Timberlake's bandmate, JC Chasez (news) found himself at the receiving end of nipplevision backlash--the NFL nixed him as halftime entertainment for the Pro Bowl, fearing that his act was too racy.
Furious at being replaced by a Hawaiian-themed extravaganza, the 'N Syncer fumed that league leadership has "clearly become so disoriented it has reduced itself to bashing me and my music to divert attention from the fact that the NFL screwed up at the Super Bowl."
Memo to Miss Jackson's costumer: Next time, use duct tape--these "malfunctions" can be costly.

If she is so worried about sexual content why isn't she suing the makers of those erctile dysfunction pharmaceutical who ran commercials throughout the telecast? I don't know what kind of tv's people have - on my 25" tv we didn't see anything - the camera was not that close. More details were shown afterwards from pictures floating on the internet.
I hope Janet's lawyers not only ram her behind in court but make her pay all her fees and punitive damages for filing a frivolous lawsuit.
I was flipping channels this morning and Wayne Brady of all people said he would not be watching the Grammy's this weekend-if Janet is so bad to be banned then Justin, the aggresor should be held equally accountable. I've already vowed not to support his punk behind eva again...but I think I will be skipping the Grammy's also.

Out of proportion
Justin was the one who pulled the bra. But Grammy's punished Janet for her nipple. Now, JC is being punished for waht Justin did. This is full of BS
If Justin cares about Janet and JC, I hope that he does not show up at the Grammy's either.

The winner: hypocrisy
By Derrick Z. Jackson, 2/6/2004
SOMEONE AT VIACOM and CBS must be whispering that the MoveOn.org ad was not so bad after all. The media giant said it was wrong to show an ad criticizing President Bush during the Super Bowl. The ad showed sad-faced children as assembly-line workers, dishwashers, and trash collectors. The ad asked, "Guess who's going to pay off President Bush's $1 trillion deficit?"
CBS Executive Vice President Martin Franks declared, "We do not accept advertising on one side or the other of controversial public issues, partly because we don't think the debate ought to be controlled by people with deep pockets."
With such pomposity about controlling controversy, it was fitting that the Super Bowl halftime show erectiled out of control. The same network that decided that we could not have our mood ruined by thoughts of mortgaging our children's future gave us instead a crotch-grabbing, butt-humping, breast-baring extravaganza that perfectly fixed the nation in a cultural moment. Questioning the president is taboo. Near porn is not.
The Janet Jackson-Justin Timberlake breast baring was merely the exclamation point. On Super Bowl Sunday, an 11-year-old girl was abducted off the streets of Sarasota, Fla., an abduction that horrified Americans with a videotape of the crime. Yet, the halftime show featured Timberlake stalking Jackson around the stage, feeling her up from behind, and singing, "I'm gonna have you naked by the end of this song."
Maybe CBS does not qualify that as politics. But context is everything. Networks and cable stations have for years now pumped out sitcoms and music videos with the same messages of aggression (not to mention racial, ethnic, and gender stereotypes). Meanwhile, budget cuts have forced states and municipalities to slash staff for rape crisis centers and domestic violence services. Massachusetts is one such state. Last year the Legislature cut rape crisis centers from $2.5 million a year to $800,000. According to Jane Doe Inc., the state's umbrella organization for domestic abuse services, the cuts resulted in pink slips for a quarter of its approximately 120 counselors.
A supplemental budget late last year brought the funding back to $1.9 million, but some services still remain curtailed, such as immediate medical counseling for rape victims in hospitals or immediate emotional counseling for women who waited months or years to report or discuss a rape. Jane Doe spokeswoman Toni Troop said, "Can you imagine a woman who held inside of her this terrible thing for years and then tell her, `Can you wait another couple of months?' "
Education and enforcement has helped reduce violence against women over the last 20 years, but the violence remains a fact of life. According to federal statistics, one in 12 women say they have been stalked during their lives and one in six American women has experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. Within relationships, one in four women were raped or physically assaulted in their lifetime by a current or former spouse, partner, or date.
Janet Jackson merely lost her bustier and her dignity during the performance. In real rapes, one out of every three women is injured during the act.
One particular statistic should make clear Viacom's and CBS's hypocrisy. Of women who said they had been raped in their lifetime, 22 percent were under 12 at the time of their first rape and 32 percent were 12 to 17 years old. Thus, a solid third of first rapes occur to precisely the target audience of Viacom's oversexed programming.
To add insult to insanity, the halftime show came between four quarters of dumb and degrading commercials. Never were men so preoccupied with their penises, from erectile dysfunction medicines to a dog that bit a certain area of a man's anatomy to get him to surrender a bottle of beer. In two ads, women were mere objects involving a flatulent horse and an excited monkey.
Even without Janet Jackson's breast, there were plenty of personal fouls that should have resulted in yellow flags from Viacom, CBS, or the National Football League. The bump and grind in between the bumping and running between the Patriots and Panthers was so ridiculous that you almost forgot the usual violence on ads for movies and Philip Morris claiming to want children not to smoke when, if it really meant it, the company would just stop selling cigarettes. (Those deep pockets don't matter. Philip Morris spent $3.9 million on the 2000 elections, giving 81 percent of its money to the Republican Party).
CBS and Viacom said an ad featuring children to make a political statement was over the top. Yet a male entertainer stalking his female prey was not. The president was spared by the media moguls. Not so lucky were America's girls as CBS and Viacom told them it was just fine for boys to sing, "I'm gonna have you naked at the end of this song."

She needs to go and jump in the lake with that lawsuit!! I was not appalled and I was not offended. I was actually entertained. I love Janet Jackson and I didn't find her "display" to be all that bad. I thought it was funny. I may be out on a limb by myself here, but I don't see the big deal. Like stardusttwin said, it happened so fast, if you would have blinked, you would have missed it. If you really weren't paying close attention, you still would have missed it. The cameras cut away very quickly. In a society where there is always such outrage over gays and lesbians getting married, having civil unions, etc., there was no outrage over Britney, Madonna, and Christina tongue kissing on TV.
People can say what they want. I would much rather my kids catch a glimpse of a boob than some girls kissing. Some/most kids have seen their mom's boobs before (depending on the comfort level in the home). Some/most of the people watching the show have their own boobs. Why would I be worried about Janet's? She had the guts to show hers on national TV. She has apologized repeatedly, yet the media and everyone else is still harping on it.
However, Britney, Madonna, and Christina can tongue kiss and it gets played repeatedly on every station on television. The pictures were displayed on the covers and pages of nearly every nationally published magazine. The pictures were blown up, zoomed in on, and highlighted so we can see the tongue exchange. Did they have to apologize? NO. Did anyone sue them for exposing their kids to "lesbian activity?" NO. Did ritney or Madonna lose any public appearances? NO. So why the big deal over Janet?
People need to write it off as a mistake that was made and keep on moving. It would be easier for me to explain to my kids about a boob that was shown and gone in a flash than explaining why two girls are kissing. Some things you take with a grain of salt. I was more appalled by a horse farting in someone's face than seeing Janet's boob pop out.

Exclusive: Timberlake Says He's Appalled
LOS ANGELES (KCBS) In an exclusive interview Wednesday, Justin Timberlake told CBS 2 News that he was appalled by what happened, and that his own family was offended by his racy Super Bowl halftime duet with Janet Jackson. The singer insisted he thought only Jackson's bustier, not her breast, would be revealed when he pulled on her costume.
CBS 2' s Mark Coogan caught up with Timberlake at the Staples Center, where he was rehearsing for this weekend's Grammy Awards.
A frustrated Timberlake told Coogan he wanted to get something off his chest, then launched into his side of the story surrounding the now infamous Super Bowl halftime stunt.
He said he is excited to be in town for the upcoming Grammy Awards show, but is frustrated by what has grown into an international incident since last Sunday, and by the fact that his character was being questioned.
"I do understand that there were a lot of people that were completely offended by what happened, including my own family. And I think that's probably the part that's frustrating the most for me and it's completely, completely, completely, regrettable," he told KCBS.
Timberlake said that he's had a really good year, especially with his music, and doesn't need such publicity.
He's been on tour for months, he said, and had been asked by his manager to do something at the Super Bowl. He said he turned it down at first, but then agreed when Jackson called him. He said they found a way to work his song and hers into the same performance, so he decided to do the show.
"I don't feel like I need publicity like this. And I wouldn't want to be involved with this stunt, especially something of this magnitude."
Timberlake said that prior to the show he got a call from Jackson and her choreographer saying they wanted to do a "costume reveal."
"Now I was under the impression that what was going to be revealed in the costume reveal was a red bustier," he said.
He said he did not have time to rehearse it before taking the stage, and was then shocked at the outcome.
"When what happened, happened, all I could say was 'Oh my God, oh my God.'"
He said they brought a towel up on stage, and he covered her up as they walked off. "I was completely embarrassed and just walked off the stage as quickly as I could."
He said later that night he was asked to explain what happened, so he did.
"And now it's turned into an unfortunate, incredibly huge situation," he added.
"The only other thing that I could say is that I do understand, I do understand, how unfortunate this is."
He said having a delay during this Sunday's Grammy Awards show, to give producers a chance to electronically block any offensive material, is a good idea as far as he is concerned. But he said the producers won't need their thumbs on any button when he performs.

I can't believe that he,along with everyone else it seems,is throwing Janet under the bus. This little weasel needs to grow a pair and take some responsibility for his own actions. What a gentleman.

Did you all really think he was going to throw his neck on the line with Janet? LOL. I know I didn't. He is the wrongfully done white boy.
Think about it if it had been Brittney's or Jessica's or Madonna's breast that we had seen on TV, it would have been but as well. But we saw a BLACK breast and that does not sit well with the watchguards.

Ray Lewis
Slightly off subject but I could've sworn that I heard Ray Lewis comment on the Janet Jackson "scandal" and he said something to the effect of how embarrasing that was for the league.. I was left scratching my head.. Like he has been a wonderful role model..

I cracked up because of this comment.
Trust me, the NFL has been through more stuff then a tittie showing. How many NFL players have been in court for various charges and how many are in jail today?!!!
