Fire Kills Five Mississippi Kids Left Home Alone
YAZOO CITY, Miss. (Oct. 6) - A fire roared through a wood-frame house early Monday, killing five of six young children who officials said had been left home alone, and police were questioning the children's two mothers.
The cause of fire was not immediately known.
The children were siblings or cousins and ranged in age from 1 1/2 to 10, County Coroner Ricky Shivers. No adults were in the home when the fire broke out, he said.
A relative of the victims, 48-year-old Dorothy Bell, said the women were sisters.
Bell said she had not talked with the women since the fire, and ''I don't want to talk to them. I've heard they weren't there. Those were innocent kids and now they are gone. Our family is really tore up.''
The flames erupted shortly after midnight, gutting the single-story house and shooting flames and thick, black smoke into the sky.
Neighbors discovered the burning home and saw a boy trying to punch out a window. A woman smashed the window with a chair, according to witness Christopher Burnett.
''The kid was just there, right there at the window, so we just pulled him out,'' said the woman, Cynthia Brown, 26. She said another man, 19-year-old Antowain Johnson, ''tried to go back in and get the rest of them but the smoke wouldn't let him.''
Officials said the 8-year-old was taken to a Jackson hospital but wasn't believed to be seriously injured.
Shivers identified the victims as Devonta Bell, 10; Tacashia Bell, 3; William Bell, 1 1/2; Kayla Williams, 7; and Theanne Sims, 4.
Dorothy Bell said Clara Bell was the mother of five of the children, including the 8-year-old survivor, and Regina Bell was the mother of the fifth victim.
Witnesses said Regina Bell returned home after the fire appearing distraught, then apparently left.
Police Chief of Detectives Eric Snow said the mothers were taken into custody following the fire. He declined to comment further.
Dorothy Bell said both women and their children had recently moved into the house, which belonged to the mothers' grandfather.
Brown said the children often came over to her house to play. She said at times the children were left unsupervised on weekends.
''I think that was real wrong,'' she said.
Capt. Steve Williams, a 23-year veteran of the Yazoo City Fire Department, said he's worked deadly fires before, but ''when it involves children, you never get used to it.''
Yazoo City, a town of about 14,500, is 40 miles north of Jackson.
The fire happened days before a woman from nearby Tchula is to stand trial for manslaughter in the deaths of six children a year ago. Authorities said those children were left alone while their mother went to a nightclub.

Grandmother gets prison in crack-smoke death of newborn
Carol Sowers
The Arizona Republic
Oct. 10, 2003 04:15 PM
A Phoenix grandmothe was given a four-year prison sentence Friday in a historic case in which prosecutors blamed plumes of cocaine smoke from her and others for the death of a 10-day-old girl.
Lillian Butler, 45, wiped away tears as Judge Ronald Reinstein of Maricopa County Superior Court told her that "something terrible happened to Anndreah that day."
"You were responsible for her and you failed to get her medical attention," the judge said.
Prosecutors said Butler, who was in charge of Anndreah Robertson's care, did not take the newborn for a scheduled checkup and waited until she was malnourished and dehydrated before seeking help in the last few hours of the baby's life.
Standing before Reinstein, Butler said, "I am very sorry for my granddaughter's death. And I did try hard to take care of her."
Butler, who had no previous record, pleaded guilty to one count of child abuse in the Nov. 9, 2001 death of Anndreah. Butler's daughter, Demitres Robertson, 24, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is awaiting sentencing.
Maricopa County prosecutors blamed the baby's agonizing death on steady exposure to crack cocaine smoke from her mother, grandmother's and step-grandfather's pipes. In a precedent-setting finding, a Maricopa County medical examiner concluded that the smoke coursed through her body in her first few days of life decayed her intestines and contributed to her death.
Other doctors disagreed. And James Cleary, Butler's attorney, argued throughout the case that the baby was born addicted to cocaine and her death could have been caused by her mother's steady pre-natal drug use.
If that had been the case, neither woman could have been charged because pre-natal drug exposure is not a crime in Arizona and most states.
Reinstein said he was "aware of the conflict over the cause of death" but said "it is still obvious that cocaine was smoked around Anndreah."
Butler's brother, James Craig, asked for leniency for his sister, saying that if she had known cocaine smoke was dangerous, "she would never have done it around the baby."
Solomon Butler, Lillian's husband, was not charged in exchange for testifying about his wife's drug use around the baby.
But on Friday, he repeated the refrain he used throughout the case, saying that he initially blamed his wife "out of anger and vindictiveness" but said she never exposed the baby to cocaine smoke.

These stories reiterate why people should have to get a license to have children.

These people are beyond stupid and are just evil. There are so many ways to give a child away if they don't want to raise it. They have NO excuses. They just want to hurt innocent and helpless people.
I hope they get what they deserve in prison!

Lock them in a room full of inmates who SO desperately want to see their kids.
The only problem is you might need dental records to identify them when the inmates finish with them!

I don't want this to get into an abortion rights/pro life discussion, but I think the reason is that most abortion activists/liberals feel that doing so would put the nation on a slippery slope to overturning Roe v. Wade. If the government can tell you you can't "harm" your baby with drugs, why can't they tell you you can't harm your baby with the saliene (sp?) solution or suction they use in abortions?

Woman Gets Jail In Assault On Boy, 4
Hot French Fries Smashed in Face
By Brigid Schulte
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, October 15, 2003; Page B01
A woman who chased a 4-year-old boy through a McDonald's restaurant in Montgomery County, Maryland pinned him in a headlock and screamed obscenities as she smeared his face with hot french fries was sentenced yesterday to four days in jail and ordered to attend anger management and parenting classes.
Milikia Hayes, 18, of Gaithersburg was nearly nine months pregnant with her first child when the incident took place in May. The boy, whom Hayes did not know, accidentally smeared ice cream on her clothing at a McDonald's in Germantown, authorities said. The boy had turned around while he was in line ahead of Hayes, and his ice cream touched her sleeve.
Hayes started screaming at the terrified boy, who ran from her, authorities said. After catching him, Hayes smeared "boiling hot, greasy french fries" on his face, said State's Attorney Douglas F. Gansler.
"The boy was scared to death," Gansler said. "It is incomprehensible to think that an adult would attack a child of any age in such a manner."
Hayes pleaded guilty to second-degree assault, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. A Circuit Court judge sentenced her to 18 months in jail, with all but four days suspended, and ordered her to attend the classes.
Hayes told authorities that she was on her way to a baby shower and was wearing one of her nicest shirts when she stopped at the McDonald's about 5 p.m. May 17.
"Clearly, her own behavior was inappropriate and egregious for any adult, much less someone about to have her own child," Gansler said. "In getting this type of sentence, we hope it will ensure that she's learned a valuable lesson and will help her in raising her own child."
After the assault, the boy's eyes were swollen, Gansler said. Although he suffered no serious physical injuries, "we don't know what kind of emotional and psychological damage he's had," Gansler said.
Hayes's attorney, Charles Lazar, did not return several phone calls seeking comment yesterday.
"We thought it was important to prosecute her for the conduct," Gansler said. "It was also important for the 4-year-old boy to understand that what this defendant did was wrong and that she was punished for it."
