Newsweek has a good story on what some of the corruption in the police and courts looks like in Ferguson.

KDCat,
Thank you for posting this ^^. Churches, frats/sororties, other organizations work continuously in the community to favorably alter the trajectory of young lives. Tutoring, mentoring have been staples of hundreds of effective organizations in any hood you want to look into.

Media usually doesn't cover these because it's not "news." But that doesn't lessen the importance of, or the committment to the work, however.

People like Madmax are aware of such programs and use the perceived necessity of such programs as evidence that Blacks are inherently violent and lesser than. That's why we usually ignore people like Madmax.

Anyway, we shall see whether Nelly's involvement will make a difference in Ferguson.

At least he's from here. (Well, he's from University City, but close enough.)

And I know I should not feed the trolls, but sometimes I like smacking them.

Is that a small city beside St. Louis? I guess that's why he tends to claim St. Louis.

I think I initiated the troll feeding. Too tempting.

I don't understand what happened last night, I was watching it but half asleep. It seemed like everything was calm and peaceful and the police showed up with the MRAP's and riot gear and things started getting out of hand.

Mr. Nanners is career military and is shocked that a local police force has an MRAP to begin with, but also in how it's being used. He said it looks a lot like Iraq on TV right now. It's crazy.

University City is a community that is right next to the city limits of St. Louis. It is the community that surrounds Washington University. You just walk across the street to get from St. Louis to U City.

People from St. Louis identify themselves as St. Louisans whether they live in the City or the County. If I say I'm from StL, someone will ask me what part, and I say the City. Nelly would say he is from StL, and if asked what part, would say U City. Residents of Ferguson would say StL, and if asked what part, would say Ferguson.

StL is very unique with the City/County structure. It doesn't make much sense to those not from here.

That's not what they'd say.

If you say that you're from St. Louis, people from St. Louis will ask you "Where did you go to high school?"

Have any GCers in the area attended the protests?

Don't tell us that you've rioted and looted. We are snitches.

Well, yes, there's that, too. But where you went to high school and where you live currently aren't always the same, so I think both questions get asked. At least, I get asked both all the time.

I haven't been to any of the protests. There was a false alarm across the street from my office building (in a different part of the area than Ferguson), and I could see it out my window. That's the closest I've been. But, then I've been out of town most of the past couple weeks for Mizzou recruitment.

I'm still praying for peace, and hoping that this advances the discussion on some serious issues locally. However, based on the kinds of things I see on my FB wall, I am afraid all that is happening is for the wedge to be driven even deeper.

No, I haven't gone. They are getting creamed by the cops and it isn't going to help. I don't have much hope of this town changing.

I think Capt. Ron Johnson is a coughkappacough.

Just saw a picture of him on HuffPo posing with a protestor who (I guess) is a Kappa. They were both throwing the K's hand sign.

...despite all that, I still like how dude's handled his business so far.

I read that the photo is circulating as "proof" that Capt. Johnson is a gangster just like all the other Black people: "See! He's throwing up gang signs with the other hoodlums!"

Morons.

Perception is reality. We can all learn a lesson from this.

We had a GC thread in which GC NIC members were equating certain things (that are characteristic of certain GLOs) as thuggish and gang behavior. Cultural insensitivity.
