That is an approximation.

It's funny, but true. People don't realize that if there is a enough radiation that you need to get those pills, radiation poisoning will be the least of your problems.

What are you going to eat? (exposed).

What water are you going to drink?

Folks that live near a power plant = yes take the pills while taking yourself away from danger.

Exactly, my dad's an engineer for the local power company and has worked at the nuclear plant here and so he's been following all of it.

It deeply bothers me when I see all this evidence laid out for why there's no risk and people saying "I KNOW THERE IS DANGER OMG PANIC" immediately after.

If anyone is that concerned about their damn thyroid, just go get a CT with contrast. That will load you with enough iodine to protect you for at least 6 weeks. But really, is your most pressing concern in this situation the possibility of getting thyroid cancer in 15 years? (BTW, if you have to get a cancer, let it be thyroid...it's pretty benign. I'm more worried about the other effects of radiation. ) It's not Armeggedon.

No! But cartoons like that are the reason that none of us had any concept of what a nuclear bomb could do.

Nooooooo. I'm going to call the high school and have our student told there before some random kid comes shrieking up to her with the news.
