1986! Yep, you're correct. (I looked up the Jackie Mayer info in the coffee table book and there's a picture of Marilyn Van Debur as well as Susan Akin. I just didn't see either picture. Time for new glasses!)

I'm late to the discussion on twirling but wanted to add that people make fun of it, but it always amazes me. Indiana was also a twirler and didn't get to perform last night but there are some cool youtube videos of her including this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFvh5nnfNIg

I was actually really impressed with the tap dancers, surprisingly--not at all with either of the pianists (being a pianist myself)--really bad technique on Miss Wyoming; like I wanted to go see a chiropractor afterward (your pinkies shouldn't look like they do when you're sipping tea--that is a really bad sign and usually means your thumb is locking up). Miss SC had fewer obvious technique issues but I wasn't a fan of the arrangement.

Jackie Mayer and I share a hometown. There's a few things there named for her. I didn't know she was a Pi Phi! Very cool!

MerriBeth is the Purdue Golden Girl. At the party I attended, there were two Miss Indiana volunteers in the room and after they showed us some footage of her twirling. She looked like she did more complicated tricks than the other twirler who did get to perform. They were both annoyed with me because in her intro she mentioned Purdue, so being a rival IU alum, I threw my allegiance behind Miss Kentucky and Miss Louisiana the two Sigma Kappas.

I put together a post about the Greek affiliations of the Miss Americas over the years. (It wasn't on my list of things to do, but this GC discussion got me going on it.) My favorite tidbit is that there were two Ole Miss Chi Omegas who became Miss America. Miss America 1959, Mary Ann Mobley, crowned her chapter sister Lynda Lee Mead, Miss America 1960.
The list is at http://wp.me/p20I1i-zK

Interesting list, thank you.
You missed Laurie Lee Schaefer, Miss America 1972 who is an Alpha Xi Delta

I think it's been discussed on here before that Heather Whitestone pledged AOPi but never initiated. Is that true AOPi friends?

My daughter, an alum of the chapter, was told that she never initiated.

Cute idea! If you're ever looking for ideas, you could do the Miss Whatevers of each State that were Greek.
Ex:
Phi Mu: Miss Alabama (2012), Miss Georgia (2012)
or
Ex:
Miss Alabama
*Phi Mu: Anna Laura Bryan (2012)-Samford University
Miss Vermont
*Chelsea Ingram (2012)-Alpha Delta Pi (School Affiliation)
*Carolina Bright (2010)-Chi Omega (School Affiliation)
I think that would also be a really cool list! Thoughts?

Thanks, I've updated the list along with a Tri Delta that I overlooked, too. It would be wonderful to have a state by state list, but I don't think it's in me to do. This list nearly did me in!

And then there would be Miss State (America) and Miss State (USA). That would be a major project!
ETA: do you suppose that Leanza Cornett was a Tri Delt at the U of Jacksonville in Florida? Jacksonville State doesn't have a chapter of DDD.
