ALPHA PSI LAMBDA CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF SERVICE AND TRADITION
AS THE NATION’S FIRST CO-ED LATINO FRATERNITY

Honoring The Past, Celebrating The Present, Looking Towards The Future

CHICAGO, Feb.11—Today notes the 25th anniversary when 13 men and women from The Ohio State University made the decision to start a Greek-lettered Latino fraternity, Alpha Psi Lambda. These individuals set the foundation for what is now the nation’s first and largest co-ed Latino fraternity.

The organization that started out with one chapter at The Ohio State University has grown over the last 25 years to 21 chapters across Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Texas and Florida with over 1,800 members. The organization has been able to fulfill year after year their mission statement: to promote continued personal and collective growth of our membership, success and unity through education, leadership, cultural awareness and community service.

“We are excited to see our organization grow the way it has. Our founders established a great foundation for young, professional, Latino leaders” says Michelle Maday, president of Alpha Psi Lambda-National, Inc. “We look forward to another 25 outstanding years and for our organization to continue to grow the way it has.” Throughout the year, Alpha Psi Lambda chapters will be hosting local events to celebrate this significant milestone. Members, family and friends of Alpha Psi Lambda will have the opportunity to celebrate the 25th anniversary at the Gold and White Ball on June 19, 2010 in Chicago IL.

For more information about Alpha Psi Lambda and their 25 year celebration please visit: www.alphapsilambda.net

About Alpha Psi Lambda:
Alpha Psi Lambda-National, Inc., was founded in 1985 at Ohio State University as a co-ed, Latino-interest fraternity by 13 Noble Men and Women. The purpose of Alpha Psi Lambda is to promote education, culture, and unity through leadership and community service. The fraternity has expanded to include 21 collegiate chapters in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Texas, and Florida; and one Alumni Chapter in Chicago, Illinois. Alpha Psi Lambda is a member of NALFO, the National Association for Latino Fraternal Organizations.

^I didn't see that one yet.

Well, my feeling on these NALFO departures is this: If a fraternity or sorority is moving in the direction of becoming "multicultural" instead of "Latino/a," then they should leave NALFO. You can't have it both ways.

What happened to Alpha Rho Lambda? I remember the "Apples" were super active in NALFO when it was first being established.

OPBSI Rocks the Planet

Contact:
Sasha Mercedes,
Director of Public Relations
PR@OmegaPhiBeta.org

NEW YORK, New York… April 1, 2010.

Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated (OPBSI) is hosting an initiative entitled “Betas Rock the Planet” during the entire month of April to be held primarily within the New York Metropolitan Area. This national initiative will consist of an educational program, a community service endeavor, and a closing celebratory event, collectively shedding light on the issues affecting our precious planet Earth.

In alignment with one of the seven goals of OPBSI, this initiative will aim to spread awareness and educate people about the need of their involvement in protecting our environment worldwide. As environmental issues continue to escalate, it is critical to focus on preserving the planet we inhabit so that not only we but also our children, grandchildren, and so on can enjoy life on Earth for centuries to come. “There’s no better way to contribute to our own planet than to spend a month in reverence of its beauty,” said Janille Esquilin, Vice President of Programming.

In addition to the aforementioned programs, OPBSI is also launching a recycling contest during which its entities and affiliates across the nation will host a Recycling Drive within their respective communities. All collected recyclables will be deposited and proceeds yielded from these recyclables will be donated to The Nature Conservancy, the leading conservation organization rooted in working to protect land and water around the world, benefiting both the environment and people across the globe.

The initiative will conclude with a commemorative picnic to celebrate forty years of Earth Day as well as the culmination of “Betas Rock the Planet” where sisters, family, and friends will enjoy food, fun activities, and nothing but nature at Riverbank State Park in Manhattan. All waste produced at this event will be recycled and disposed of appropriately.

This is way too simplistic. Three orgs left because they are no longer Latino orgs? C´mon! As a member of one of the three, I know that it is not so. Caring for multicultural membership is one thing, stop being Latino-based is another. As for the reasons for leaving, each org has its own, and I would add, it may be reflection time for NALFO. Why did they leave? Should they have left? Will other leave? I´m not going to answer, but they are really good questions, and the answers should be better.

their press release didn't give a reason only that NALFO's regulations were limiting the growth of SLB, if we want their side, it would be best to contact their representatives.
