When I attended SNC (mid-90s) many first-semester freshmen could join independent/non-greek social organizations but not join greeks until 2nd semester. First semester you could go through rush first semester and express interest, but not actually get a bid until going through rush the 2nd semester. Things have probably changed across the board with independent social groups and overall greek recruitment in the past 20 years (it was locals and Kappa Beta Gamma when I was there), but being allowed to do fall recruitment and have freshmen join their first semester IS a big deal (in reply to 33girl's post).

Bid Day at Stanford
Today is bid day at Stanford University and I think the last formal recruitment of the 2013-14 recruitment season.

In reference to Stanford and other schools, since they have bid day so late in the semester, how does that work?

I believe Stanford (and many other California schools) are on a quarter system and the school years goes into the summer longer than other colleges.

Stanford graduation is usually the second weekend in June. They are on the quarter system and do not start classes until the third week of September.
