Just something to add here - had a friend from college and she called herself "dark skinned". She did not say she was "black" or even "African American". She was from Miami and did not live in a predominantly white area by any means. It was rather a diverse area.
She did not try to be a part of an NPC or NPHC org. Back in the day, she would have had a hard time finding a home in either. She ended up becoming a little sister to an all white fraternity and was thrilled. (I should add all types of people from various backgrounds had issues with her, no matter what she did) She even ended up marrying a white male and now lives in a predominantly white area.
It is so very hard to categorize and try to analyze these things. There is no rhyme or reason to any of it. People will just be people and it is called life. You can't make everyone happy.
I just wish people would be a tiny bit more understanding of things - no matter how wrong they think it is. You can beat this type of topic and it will never be over.

But it isn't impossible and happens everyday by laypersons and in disciplinary subject matters.

There actually is. People operate in trends and patterns and allow for generalizations to be made. Even "exceptions" operate in similar trends and patterns as other exceptions.
Your friend is actually quite typical, even if she isn't from a predominantly white area.

I don't know if anyone will believe me or not.
I had no interest in joining an NPHC sorority, because it didn't really occur to me to join one. I wasn't fully aware of the existance of NPHC orgs until I started reading GC. I knew there were a such thing of black orgs, but they weren't active on my campus at all (at that time). It was kind of out of sight, out of mind thing, I guess. I was non-greek the first year of college, and I knew many of the NPC/IFC greeks from class. I liked certain NPC sororities and their "brother" IFC chapters more than others, so next fall I rushed the ones I liked.
But, looking back, I probably would have not joined an NPC sorority. One of the things I liked about APO (my chapter) was the diversity, and not just racial diversity, I fitted in really well. I don't think I would've fit into a typical NPC or NPHC sorority chapter, in my area.

I'll pass on the eggroll. Greasy and fried nothingness. Not big enough for a full meal. Waste of calories. Gets better with ducksauce but I'd rather have Asian noodles.
You have an Asian noodle?

i can make ducksauce on command. it comes (he he) out of the egg roll.
they can't be like us because we're the model minority. blacks and hispanics should strive to be like the asians.
and own nail salons.
and black hair care stores.
and do math good.
wait.
who is "they?"

This topic of blacks rushing NPC and "selling out" about it reminds me of that episode of Fresh Prince when they rushed.

Pantherteke--I haveta be honest, I ain't never met a sistah named Molly... Maybe Michelle, Monique or Mercedes AMG But not Molly... LOL
tld22--as a new grad ad--(my ad-vice ), the best thing you can do for your sorority sisters is make sure they graduate from college, successfully!!! Use your Sorority's International program objectives to make that happen. One thing that worked for me is review their school schedules and get their parents names, addresses, phone numbers and cells. And give an upfront cost to being a member. Also use your fellow greek advisors from the NPHC. Make the grad council NPHC work together for your organization. Meet with the school admins, meet these "kids" professors, and if you get the chance, have contracts to be signed. Why that is important? When I cleaned up some of my undergrads "academic issues", other NPHC UG greeks and some IFC/NPC greeks started coming to me. My university was NOTORIOUS for alienating ALL GLO's. A more comprehensive program would prove beneficial. And that is how we do it as graduates anyway--or atleast that is what it should be.
Let's set the record straight--NO WHERE IN MY COMMENTS SAY I AM OPPOSED TO ANY BLACK PERSON JOIN THE ORGANIZATION OF HIS/HER CHOICE!!!
What I AM saying is we have these "kids" who see all the hoopla at recruitment. Then they join. Then they see all the NPHC hoopla and wonder why they just did not know. And they slide back to us and wonder why they cannot join--some don't care and K.I.M.
Is that an issue for us? Welp, we keep getting kids posting new threads on GC to pit the IFC/NPC vs. NPHC GLOs... And we have to PLACATE to these non-searching insecure asinine fools. My question is WHY? If dude or chick ain't grown enuf to make a gottdayum decision then they don't know who the fcuk they are!!! PLEASE DON'T JOIN MY SORORITY!!! WE DON'T WANT YOU!!! BE SOMEBODY ELSE'S PROBLEM!!!
