It seems that many people are saying that the stage productions are better.

They're different. You can't really expect an apples to apples comparison. Just like you can't really compare a touring company in a 1500 seat theatre to the more intimate smaller theatre setting in New York. They're just different.

I saw the show on Broadway with the original cast and saw a touring cast here in Denver and just got back from the movie.

I really liked it. It did lag just a bit in the middle, but not enough to be a huge problem.

I was concerned that the original cast might be too old to pull it off. Not so.

I was worried about not having the original Mimi. No problem. Rosario was good.

They did a heck of a job -- and so did the director.

I agree -- I'll get the DVD when it comes out just to watch when I'm nostalgic.

BTW, the Rocky Mountain News reviewer gave it a "B." I was at least that. Probably not an A+, but pretty damned good.

Yep...been singing "I'll Cover You" and "Seasons of Love" all day!
The movie is not Mr. 1228's style (he is not a Broadway person) so I went alone

I've seen the stage production and read the LA Times review (I haven't seen the movie yet). I know the LA Times panned it, but what they really panned was the storyline....well, HELLO!!! The storyline is based on the play!!! They also compared RENT to "Team America's" 'Everyone has AIDS,' but this was the case in the stage version as well.....

They didn't really critique the cinemotography, the acting or the singing...the LA Times mainly critiqued Jonathan's original concept....which tells me that the author probably wouldn't have enjoyed the stage version either (which I did immensely!)....

Same here - one of my roommates in college played the soundtrack in our room frequently, so when I heard about the movie, I was so excited to go see it. I did mention to one of the girls I went with that I *wish* I had seen the play before the movie, just so I knew what to expect (and that way I would've had Kleenex with me! )

I'd definitely go see it again, and it's a definite must buy when it comes out!

I saw it opening day and the more that I think about it, the more I loved it. It really was just beautiful. Film critics are absolute idiots and I honestly don't know why the reviews have been so harsh. The performances were fabulous, the direction was beautiful and I thought they did an amazing job making it work as a movie. They really developed different storylines, characters and especially the relationships. Little things that I never really understood in the musical suddenly made so much more sense on screen.

Jesse L. Martin has one of the most unbelievable voices I've heard in a while. And a beautiful smile to boot.

I saw it tonight and thought it was pretty good. They definitely did not butcher it, which is about as much as you can ask for when it comes to movie adaptations these days. That said, I usually start crying at Angel's death and sob straight through 'til the end of the show, and this time I only managed a good 15 minutes, so based on the tears alone, it was a little sub-par.

That's pretty much how our son the wannabe Broadway star felt about it.

Of course he's a snob.

I'm sure you're not.

I can't believe you called your son a snob. That actually made me laugh.

So I just got home from Rent and I have three words...

I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!

I thought the cast, director, screenwriter did a wonderful job incorporating the integrity of the play into the movie. And doing something like that is no easy task. And I've seen the play like six times, pretty much every time it's come to AZ I've seen it. I love the play. When I was watching the movie I kept thinking "man they are doing such a great job".

I also bawled my eyes out. OMG. Not that the theater was crowded, but you could hear the people crying.

The AZ Republic gave the movie 4 out of 5 stars. (This is coming from the critic who trashed Phantom because Rauol was singing instead of trying to escape ). I have a feeling this guy has actually seen Rent so he has a general idea what the play is about unlike his review of Phantom (which is kind of dumb since Phantom has come to Phx like 8 times since 1995).

You should hear what he says!

Actually, he's very bright (National Merit, 4.0 through three years of college, etc.), but he does tend to see things his own way.

Can you believe it?
