I'm so excited for rush! This will be my second time on "the other side" and I am even more excited than last year!!! There are so many girls that go through rush at my school, it was over 1000 last year

so I am sure AXJules and I will have some interesting stories to share once it's all over!

I'm so happy there is so much excitement around!!! I can't wait to get back to school and start our 8 hr practice sessions!!! I want to sing the songs and make the food and don my pin and meet my future little....sigh it's almost like planning a wedding. (yes, that's right I am a big fat NERD).

Moxie-I totally hear you about the dues thing. I work full time right now, and live on my own. Thankfully I got a scholarship for school, and I will probably use my loan $$ to pay for dues, but you should see if your houses have payment plans. I've heard some of these great GC girls talk about that, and that's what I was planning on doing until I found out about my scholarship.
The average for your first year here (living in-town) is about $2600. I personally don't have that just lying around. I don't know if it's okay to talk about money during your rush (as far as dues and such) but if you can, ask the houses if they allow payment plans.

OMG!! those new member dues are outrageous!! where do those girls get that kind of money??!! our dues are well under $1,000 and we try to aim even for under $500!!
geez, i don't think i could afford to go greek anywhere else!!

Those numbers are from the University of Oklahoma website. I was shocked. I went to a small school, our dues were not near that much. But they do have some really nice houses at OU. We did not have a house, I think that is one of the reasons it was less expensive for us.

For a big school, these aren't that high. I paid about $900-1000 in dues my first semester, and about $550 my second. I know there are schools out there that are much worse than Wisconsin, too. I can't imagine UT-Austin being very cheap, for example.

I don't know about those dues. That's frighteningly expensive IMHO, and it makes me rather glad that my school is less gung-ho about Greek life in general since $$$ means an already disinterested student body is less inclined to shell out that dough. At NYU, sister dues range from $230 at the low end to $900 at the high end. Housing and meals are separate, though, since NYU's Greek life is housed within the dorms along with the normal students.

DAMN! $5,000....For that money I could rent a small apartment!

The $5000 figure is for living in the house -- I'm guessing that it includes room, board, and dues (at least room and board). Put that way, it's not that expensive. Even though dues are on the expensive end here, they're not too bad once you're living in -- it's actually cheaper to live in the house than it is to live in the dorms, not counting dues, and if you take dues into account it's only a little more expensive.

I have heard that about the University of Oklahoma also. That the living expenses are less at the house, than to live in the dorms. It just seems like more because the dues are rolled in.

I definitely couldn't afford to go Greek there, unless my parents were helping me out. And since they aren't . . . well, it's probably a good thing I'm not at Texas.

I get soo upset when I read statements like the one above

According to the UTx website: room and board on campus is $7,088.00.

According to the UTx Panhellenic website: the least expensive sorority to pledge is Kappa, dues, room and board as a pledge would be $5,547.00 and as an active $5,257.00 ( I will let you do the math). There are seven chapters on UTx campus that are less expensive to join and live-in house, then to be a GDI and live on campus. There are four chapters that are about the same and only three that are more expensive; Zeta being the most expensive at $9,433 your first year and $9,158.00 there after.

On most campuses it is less expensive to be a member of a GLO then to be a GDI. And the benefits are untouchable... Leadsership, community involvement, sisterhood/brotherhood, friends, job connections, scholarship for undergrad, grad and continuing education, I could go on for days. Pi Phi even as a fund for sisters in need.. ex. When a sister's home was destroyed by fire, Pi Phi was there to help financially and emotionally. As a GDI there is not much of that you will get unless you are a natural go getter.. and even so.. you do not always have the support behind you.

hey girl!! too much spirit is never a bad thing!! congrats on all your accomplishments!!

we're in the process of preparing for the fall too...we run our rush a little differently though...we won't start until the beginning of september. we have the first 2 weeks of school i believe just doing PR and setting up informal interest meetings...then we gotta go to orlando for our national convention!! i'm so excited cause it'll be my first...so right after we get back we start. i'm defintly excited too!! it's never to early to be prepared anyway. at my school you have to fight to reserve meeting rooms and all that type of stuff...so we don't want to be left in the cold.

anyway - good luck on everything!! i hope it goes well for you
