Everyone has lost their minds. BET has for supporting and putting themselves in a foolish situation. If someone wants to start a petition against a singer. A television company whos main goal is to support black artisits should never be apart of that...especially not a show that allows Lil' Bow Wow to be number one for the gillionth time in a row....

Soul Train has lost their minds for responding to such a thing. They are a long time respected black show...way before AJ and Free were born and most of the people signing the petition.

People have lost their minds because they are taking this WAY too seriously... and not thinking it through.... No one thinks Ashanti is all that....but..no one had a bigger year than her...its about the YEAR..not lifetime, not total overal talent... Alicia Keys'; album came out in 2001 and that was her big year...Mary had a big 2001 also...its not an award to give to those we feel deserve it, even if the year was not that big....thats what the Oscars seemed to have done with Halle and Denzel and look at all the backlash..we wanted them to win, thought they deserved it because of their career, but not becuse of that specific movie....

the girl went gold the first week....she is double platinum...she help write J-Lo and Ja-Rules Im Real and Jo-Lo's Aint that Funny... She was the only female artist ever to have 1,2,3 top single on the charts...foolish was the most requested single ever in Hot97 (NY people know) history... I dont think shes all that...but the stats say otherwise...

Talking Wow

This really is steaming people! I signed, what the heck, but Soul Train has no obligation to listen to us. It's just freedom of expression to sign the petition, to let the PTB know how we feel.

Ashanti isn't worth folks cussin and mess, I mean, come on, she's another product of the industry. And I'm definitely not hating on her, she apparently does have some singing talent, if the video shown on "The Source All Access" show is to be believed. People are just getting tired of the awards show mill.

I think the whole thing is that Soul Train needs to rename the award. Aretha implies class, longevity, talent and soul. The award is just about one year's numbers. It should be named after Alicia Keyes. You know, like the Soul Train Alicia "I've got the fastest/largest PR machine behind me, and I'll be on anybody's CD" Keyes Lady of Studio Soul Award? I think that works

I agree with you Lex..if this was called the "Mariah Carey Outstanding Achievement Award" or the "Lil Kim Outstanding Achievement" same description for the award...no one would care...hahahah....

Ok, but if we were to look at those things, Alicia or Mary should have won the award last year... but they didn't. And, I must say, this "thing" with Ashanti is of NO comparison to the Oscars and the success Denzel and Halle has had.

STATS SHMATS! If she were all that and had been in the game that hard and blew up the spot for a whole "year," why didn't they stick her "talented" a$$ in the Essence Music Fest? maybe next year, huh? (doubt it)

Ashanti is alright.. i mean i will respect her as a artist, writer and author (book of poetry coming out soon) more or less as a person. But I don't consider her r and b... yes she has slow songs.. and yes i catch myself singing along to some of her songs.. but she is a pop artist. she is in the same category as brittney spears and j lo to me.. she associates with hip hop artist..she samples smooth out r&B music. But she is a good new comer.. and just that.. She needs to do a song with out sampling.. and to show that she can do better..I give her the congrats that she deserve for what she has so far.

Only one of those songs, "Foolish" really belonged to her. The other two songs, she sung a Hook for Ja Rule and Fat Joe. I'm sorry, but singing hooks should not qualify one to win an Aretha Franklin award. As far as Hot 97 is concerned, I don't even waste my time listening to that station anymore.

Don Cornelius Speaks Out!

Don Cornelius has commented that the Aretha Franklin award doesn't have to go to one who sounds, or looks like Aretha Franklin. He goes on to say that "Ashanti cd has sold this and has sold that. I think Irv Gotti called Don and he thought that it was one of John Gotti's boys .

Thumbs down Looks? What do they have to do with anything?

Okay...
The thing with the AF award is that someone who gets the award SHOULD live up to her name/career. Has Ashanti taken up a "cause"? UHHH, NO (I guess the murrrrder handsign???)! Has she had to endure any hardships? UHHH NO! Didn't it take Aretha longer than 8 months to make it or to pay her "dues"? Didn't Aretha write ENTIRE songs, not only HOOKS? YES. Isn't she a musician? YES!

Let's look at the Lena Horne Award: Who is getting it? Isn't it Angela Bassett? Does she look like Lena? HELL you know what NAW! Has Angela had a terrific, LONG acting career, like Lena? Yeah! Has Angela paved the way for AA females, like Lena? Yes!

Whatever Don...what the freak ever! You are just trying to keep ST above board. You know you's scurrrred of MTV and 'nem. You's just trying to compete.

You all are laughing at my post, but I am as serious as a terminal disease.

I saw Re-Re on BET tonight last night. She and Ed, rather, she was cooking this food. Anyway, they go to another room, where Re-Re is playing the piano (these chords and thangs). Ed is doing her interview asking her various questions and stuh. I was sitting there thinking after Re-Re gave her responses, that ASHANTI does not deserve this...SALES OR NO SALES. Ashanti's songs aren't even the same caliber of songs as Arethas. Where is the SOUL, the HEART, the PAIN, the TURMOIL? When you hear Aretha's songs, that's what you get. If you do not believe me, pick-up the work that gave her the title "Queen of Soul".

If anything ST needs to get a Fly-by-night award to these remaking, hook singing heffas (Ashanti, Lil Mo, etc. etc.).

No, I know you are, and you are dead on it, but you're still hilarious!

But, I thought the Source Awards would have taken care of the one-hit-wonders and scantily-clad women. Or BET Awards at least...

Soul Train has issued yet another response!

And another! Why are the three paragraphs all one sentence long? Can we say run-on sentences?

After reading these two alleged responses, I am thouroughly convinced that they cannot be represenative of Soul Train. I just REFUSE to believe it. Please Lord, say it ain't so.

*Sidebar* When spelling ain't, why is there an apostrophe between the "n" and the "t"? Exactly what letter are we omitting? I'm assuming it's an "o", but then what is the "ai" about? Not that "ain't" is grammatically correct anyway, but now I'm going to have to check out the etymology of the word. *End Sidebar*
