Alienist by Caleb Carr.
Not what you think!
1890's NY, serial killer when Teddy Roosvelt was NYPD Commisioner.

I read that back when it was first published. Intriguing book.
The Orphanmaster is crossing a line into Freaky, and I'm not sure if I'll finish it. I need to ask a question about it on GoodReads, as I just don't do cannabilism.
In the interim, I'm reading The Gingerbread Murder, one of Joanna Fluke's excellent mind candy.

For those who don't mind freaky, here are some of the reviews on The Orphanmaster. I will not be finishing it.
I am reading The Escape, by David Baldacci. If you like Baldacci, you'll like this one, too.

Ew. I'm still going to give it a try, but I'm not as excited about it as I was previously....

As per usual, I have two going. The nonfiction is Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, which I've been wanting to read for years and received for Christmas. This may take a while!
I'm also reading Joanne Fluke's Key Lime Pie Murder for my mind candy.

The Orphanmaster by Jean Zimmerman. I'm only two chapters into the book, but it's very intriguing. This is from Goodreads:
"It’s 1663 in the tiny, hardscrabble Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, now present-day southern Manhattan. Orphan children are going missing, and among those looking into the mysterious state of affairs are a quick-witted twenty-two-year-old trader, Blandine von Couvering, herself an orphan, and a dashing British spy named Edward Drummond....
Jean Zimmerman brings New Amsterdam and its surrounding wilderness alive for modern-day readers with exacting period detail."

Invasion of the Tearling, 2nd book in the Queen of the Tearling series by Erika Johansen. Liked the first, liking this one too. Just anxious that the final (?) book doesn't come out until June. And I needed something light and fun (and short!) after Atlas Shrugged.
Side note: absolutely hated The Carrie Diaries. The show was cute before the CW cancelled it, but the book was just horrible.
