Tyler, you might want to check out the definitions of hazing on www.stophazing.com

My chapter went on a roadtrip for a weekend to visit another chapter on a different campus., that all the pledges were "recomended" to go on. I had the best weekend of my college career, and you're going to try and tell me that was hazing???? If your not why don't you visit that website and read the definition.

Craziest rumor I've heard was that some sorority makes their pledges wash toilets in the sorority house with their hair! Honestly, who comes up with this bs?!

These are rumors at my campus, but I am pretty sure they are true:

i have heard rumors of making pledge classes eat an entire pack of cigarettes(even the box and plastic).

i have also heard that a fraternity ties their pledges hands behind their backs. the pledges must put the fire in the fireplace out by waddling to the toilet and getting a mouth full of water to spit on the flame.

blind-folding pledges and telling them to drop their boxers while an entire sorority sits watching.

beer bonging a gold fish.

supposedly during a certain fraternities hell week their pledges have to clean up one of their parties by drinking whatever is in leftover cups and beer cans(cig. butts, chew, etc.)

At another school I have heard of the elephant walk. Don't really want to describe it.

My favorite rumors about our house are 1) naked pillow fights in the basement (its locked and there only one key so no one can get in there) as part of inition which we then watch every year in the spring and 2) we take our NM to the nearest corn field ( oh about 30 min away BY CAR) and drop them off and they have to find their way back to the house for inition ( and the non-existant pillow fight). As we all know, none of this is true :-P although i love being asked about it cuz i get to laught at them and tell em its true knowing that in reality our NM's get spoiled beyond belief :-P Some of the ones from the other houses are : steal at least one thing from every fraternity house, the infamous coffin and dead owl and one of the fraternities appearently had to keep live mice and take them to class with them and at the end of the week ( after attached to them) they had to kill em or feed em to a snake or something.....riiiight those are the recent ones from our campus....

A fraternity at my school (who everyone wishes would just drop off the face of the earth people all of their members are TRASH) makes their pledges go to Panhellenic when the sororities are having meetings and take pictures of their chapter rooms.

Okay - the set up at my school is there is one huge dorm for sororities. Each sorority has their own chapter room to hold meetings and rituals. Luckily that night when they openned our CHAPTER ROOM DOOR to take a picture of us during meeting, it was only agenda and not ritual. We lock the door for ritual anyways - but still.

It just irks me. What if another sorority abesent mindedly forgot to lock their door for a ritual meeting, and these jerks openned the door and took a picture of it?

Well obviously you can see why we all hate them! Ugh. If someone said hey I know blah blah's ritual would you like me to tell you - I would defintily say no. That secret is something you have to respect, and obviously these guys didn't.

Oh well, they already got kicked out of their big house a few years ago and now have to live in this crappy house. Their membership has completely dropped - and they wonder why.

To add to this delightful list:

Erm, hazing _does_ happen. Circle the fat isn't just a rumor on my campus; a member of a fraternity mentioned to one of my sisters that his fraternity had participated in some heinous hazing on behalf of certain sororities.

And a frat on my campus got disbanded and is currently under investigation because they had a bonfire inside the school-owned dormitory with all their pledges sitting around in diapers. I think the guys are all idiots and that those sororities who want them back as a legit fraternity are on crack. Any GLO who does that to their NMs and school property doesn't deserve to be called Greek.

Hazing on my campus does occur, but that's probably because greek life here has been around since almost the beginning of GLOs!

Our nationals has really strict rules regarding hazing and we follow them but because we are the only house on campus that "doesn't haze" people don't believe us and think that we just do it behind closed doors. One of my sisters got into an argument with another greek about the fact that we don't make our NMs do anything horrible, she just couldn't believe it.

Of course we have heard tons of rumors about other houses, and Of course, these are rumors but most of them are probably true, or at least have a seed of truth in them somewhere.

Just to name a few...

handing out your phone number to random guys on the street
midnight summons
circle the fat
dressing up in funny outfits chosen during hell week
actives getting their NMs completely drunk...repeatedly
spelling tests of actives first and last names

and from what i hear, the fraternities are even worse...

As for the last 2 posts, I don't believe that anyone ever has or would circle fat. It's pointless anyway--like it would encourage people to lose weight? --and when new posters bring it up right off, I'm suspicious. *Somebody* seems to be trying to dissuade rising freshmen from rushing.

I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from rushing. I'm just pointing out the unfortunate fact that hazing does indeed occur and rising freshmen should be alert for any gut warnings. I mean, a lot of what I've read on this thread is rather amusing in a ridiculous manner, but unfortunately on my campus, hazing does occur in the aforementioned fashions. Let's not forget the fraternities making their pledges march single file behind a brother in exactly his footsteps...*sigh*

I'm proud to be a member of my sorority, especially since AST doesn't haze. However, we seem to be the only ones, because all the other sororities on my campus have, at the very minimum, a 'Hell Week'. What goes on during this period varies from group to group, but just making your NM's have to deal with an additionally stressful time before they can hope for initiation is hazing regardless. One of my friends was exhausted by her Hell Week, and her sorority just runs them ragged with errands instead of abusing them emotionally.

Anyhow, I was just trying to give a cautionary heads up. Sorry if I seemed to have some weird, dubiously heinous motive behind my post.

I laugh anytime someone brings up the goat thing because of something that happened to my boyfriend.

For intiation, they always go to some random obscure place out in the middle of nowhere the night before. Well they were outside and it was pitch black but the actives knew where they were going. All of a sudden they heard a cow moo. My boyfriend's pledge class got the crap scared out of them because for a split second they thought that all those things they'd heard about what fraternities do to pledges was true! Of course though, it wasn't. It gave everyone a good laugh though.

Now they all laugh their asses off about it. I do too because I can just imagine the horrified look on my boyfriend's face.

I agree, carnation. Circle the fat doesn't happen...as often as people believe. However, it did at one point 6 years ago on my campus. A fraternity brother that is a friend of mine showed me pictures they stole from a sorority house. It was horrifying.

If any PNMs are reading this...DON'T let these rumors discourage you!!! 99.9% of the time that's just what they are...rumors! Maybe things did happen at one time, but rules and people joining GLOs have changed for the better.

Oh, this is making me laugh! Hmm, let's see:

Supposedly...

A sorority makes their pledges do coke
The infamous circling of fat
XYZ makes their pledges strip for fraternity guys

I was sitting in our late-night diner one night and I saw some guys eating at full speed and talking about how they had to get to the house. Apparently, they had to gain 5 pounds in one day.
I don't know which fraternity they were in, though.
