Oh I definitely agree with the no technical school thing unless they are going for something that is actually a tech school thing like drafting or machinery.

Boyfriend when to a technical school and they haven't done squat for him.
And I have other friends at the same school as well, that have had to work a lot harder to find a job bc of it.
No way.

I know my husband and I will say absolutely NO to UNC lol! We both went to NCSU, so our house will not be divided.

I cannot also have my child going to the University of Arizona either...

Started a Sun Devil, graduated as a member of the Wolfpack!

I live in a divided house- my husband went to a rival school of mine. In fact, the first time I met him, he had something on that had his school emblem on it and I made fun of him relentlessly. Strange way to charm a guy!

But in all honesty, having a divided house is fun! That being said, if our kid decided to go to his alma mater, I have to admit that I'd be a bit crushed. And would show up at campus events with my own school's symbol on my shirt.

I'm right there on the no for profit colleges bandwagon. I work in HR, and I hear the snickers whenever a resume comes in with Univeristy of Phoenix/Strayer/ ITT et. all listed for college.

Don't think an overly conservative relgious school would work either- so no BYU, Liberty, Oral Roberts, etc. We are catholic, but there are even some ultra-conservative catholic schools that I wouldn't be happy about either- Ave Maria and Stubenville come to mind.

And my kids COULD go to a Michigan or Miami U or another big rival school to either Ohio State or Ohio University - however I WON'T be sitting in the stands cheering on their school's teams! (and if my kids are playing sports for them, I'll cheer on individual accomplishment, but I don't think I could ever yell Go Blue! and the only Miami cheer I know is Muck Fiami...)

Don't forget Circleville Bible and Mount Vernon Nazarene.

Well-known, "I didn't come here for school, I just want to get married an have babies before 22" colleges in Ohio.

They're also not accredited (like, their education programs don't even meet the state licensing requirements.)

Ok, I lied. There goes another type of school I wouldn't want my kids attending in addition to a for-profit. lol.

One of my HS friends is super-duper Catholic (he became really religious sometime in college, he was liberal Catholic beforehand), and that's where he's getting his second Master's (in Catholic education). His wife was doing the whole Pampered Chef/Mary Kay/Avon thing and now she's getting her M.Ed from Liberty University! Since they're going to be teaching in Catholic schools forever it's not so objectionable to have degrees from those places.

He and his wife have been married for a little over 5 years, and their first kid was born 10 months to the day after their wedding. He occasionally sends me forwards about how T-Mobile supports Planned Parenthood. I'm like, do you know who I am?

His kids are cute and he's got great taste in music so I let it slide...for now.

Ha Ha Ha. I haven't spoken with the Cedarville crowd since high school. I think they were locked away somewhere.

I'm SO at a loss at what I would suggest or NOT suggest for my hypothetical kids.

I don't think I'd suggest my alma mater. It's way better for graduate/professional study. I wouldn't be OK with commuting to school either - residental all the way. If I could do school over, I would've wanted a more traditional experience (locally, a SUNY or, out-of-state, a Big Ten?) so maybe I'd recommend that.

*lights match* maybe not over my dead body per se, but I am very on the fence about my kid going to an HBCU. I've met some great people from those schools, but...meh. Not 100% sold.

I was avoiding this but since you went there....

My daughter or son will not be attending CERTAIN HBCUs. I have about 5 HBCUs that I appreciate academically, professionally, and socially. I won't specify which ones. My child will know.

Ok...I'm getting ready to duck and run:

As proud Trojans all (although my husband went to Penn) the University of Texas Austin is absolutely out!!! Not happening.....EVER.......for generations.

(But I must say we have been to Austin. It is a lovely city with really nice people. The only thing was....there was a party going on and they showed a replay of "the game" TWO years later. Pathetic.)

.......not that we hold a grudge or anything. (there is one name that is NEVER said in this house......almost gave up baked beans because of this guy)

........and they even have an AEPhi chapter there......still NO WAY!!!!!

I think I would tell my child, if I ever had one, the same thing my parents told me. Because I could get in my flagship state university (University of Georgia) they would not pay out of state tuition to another state school. If it was an expensive private college it would have to be a very good one like an Ivy or something like Stanford, Duke, etc and I should be prepared to study hard to justify the expense. I did go private and do study hard.

tld221 and DrPhil brought me out of lurking retirement on this one. I feel 100% the opposite.

Although I definietly have my "5 favorites", my child can NOT attend a non-HBCU for undergrad. Go to graduate/professional school (almost) anywhere you want, but for undergrad HBCU or bust!
