Well, in early 2000 he was arrested for possession of marijuana with intent to sell.  He and his roommate got busted in a sting by the cops and where they found weed, bags, scales, a shotgun and $23,000 in cash in his house.
Just before that, he had been awarded a place on the 2000 Olympic team. Though, when the arrest warrant came out, he turned himself in and resigned his place from the team. I believe he ended up pleading "no contest" to the charges.
I saw him a year later at an archery tournament we were competing at - his appearance was interesting to us as we thought he had quit altogether. From what I understand, he's now got his life back on track and is again an athlete-in-residence at the ARCO Olympic Training Center here in San Diego (Chula Vista to be specific). I really hope he's gotten himself together and can bust out a nice come back. He's a super talented archer!

A columnist in the Baltimore Sun actually wrote the following:
"Note to Michael (Phelps): Hey, fella, you might want to think about pulling up your Speedos during the post-race celebrating. Those babies are riding a little low in the front, if you catch my drift. Generally, you only see trunks that low at a Chippendales show."
I feel like writing the man an e mail telling him to leave the poor boy alone; some of us have no problem with how low his Speedo rides, thank you very much.
Oh, and speaking of young Michael, apparently someone in Paris Hilton's camp has called the owner of diner in North Baltimore where he eats breakfast every morning trying to get his phone number. I would hate to see someone so clean-cut with someone so, um, experienced like Paris.
