Let's see...so while I was in England (funeral, there for 10 days), I had a discussion with a friend about good American bands. She thought there weren't any. At the time I couldn't think of one but I swore I'd grab my ipod and find some. Apparently almost my entire collection of good artists are brits so...I could use some recommendations. We wound up agreeing on The Killers and I have about 3 songs by them on my ipod.

Lately...
Dragonette (Goldfrapp meets Feist. JCPenney crowdsurfing ad. This is how I find new artists. I use adtunes.com.)
Roisin Murphy (torrent site, doesn't exist on US itunes. The song Cristina is dancing to at the beginning of the last new Grey's? I think it's the last one? Great album anyway)
Kaiser Chiefs (last year my local radio station played Ruby and people complained. WTF is wrong with people?)
Kate Nash
Lily Allen
Sia-do yourself a favour, download Breathe Me if nothing else. Though the entire new album is amazing.

I hate to do this because it kinda helps out my ex, but I've discovered some fantastic bands through http://www.ourstage.com/. OTOH it also helps out my brother because he also works for the website so...

I'm in love with Action Painters, they're brilliant.
Plushgun rule.
And finally Beehive.
I'd say Joseph Arthur but...not too new to me. But he's amazing, so if you don't know him, go listen now.

Uh . . . well . . . just in the last ~14 months, you'd probably like new releases by:

-LCD Soundsystem
-Blitzen Trapper
-Bon Iver
-Vampire Weekend
-The National
-Dirty Projectors
-Okkervil River

That ignores more "established" performers that fit your style preferences well, like:

-Elliott Smith
-Rilo Kiley (or Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins' stuff)
-Modest Mouse
-Spoon

I just realized that I have no idea why Augustana was not on my ipod. Or why NiN doesn't count!
I do have a bunch of Spoon but it seems like I tend to put more videos than music on my ipod lately since my ex hijacked my hard drive. I haven't listened to music consistently in quite some time. So for some reason it wasn't on there and I couldn't say, 'you guys are missing out, enjoy the entire Veronica Mars soundtracks.' (You'd really like them actually, whoever picked music for that show has unbelievable taste).

Also for some reason I thought Spoon was Aussie. Guess not.

Anyone who likes The National I think would also really like The Weakerthans. Very lyric-driven.

Also, as I'm sure loads of people here Feist and Cat Power, you should really check out Thao Nguyen (with the Get Down Stay Down). Her album is incredible (my #1 for January) and I saw her in concert last night...incredible.

I recently saw Thao again, but this time I booked the show and put it together. If you get the chance to see her, you really really should. I should be booking her again soon, so if you live near KY, be sure to catch the show...

The Weakerthans are great. Their lyric writer use to be with Propagahndi.

I've been listenin alot to Billy Bragg and Wilco's cover of Woody Guthrie Songs.

Thanks to Pandora, I've recently been introduced to Justin Nozuka, The Village Green, and Tyrone Wells.

A band from Glasgow called Dananananaykroyd (say it in the tone of the Batman theme). Not really sure what to classify it as, sounds like a mix of a whole bunch of bands with a hint of At the Drive In.

on a lighter/more mellow note, I've been listening to Frightened Rabbit, "Midnight Organ Fight" for months. Saw them live at Carnegie Mellon and was blown away. They're great live, they're great on the album.

Just came back to check out GC after a LONG absence

Not sure if you've heard, but Joy Formidable have been blowing up since signing to Ayad's (of Passion Pit) label

As for actual stuff I'm listening to now...The National, Class Actress, Brahms, Janelle Monae...and since it's been a while, some older ones are Joanna Newsom, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Sleigh Bells, Holy F*ck, Washed Out, Girls, The Drums, XX, Bad Veins

also you guys should check out what Niia is doing

I was at Bamboozle in NJ in May. You would've liked it.
