Nope. They were all swet girls but I'm not going to force myself into a large commitment of time and money to hang out with girls that I personally did not feel a connection with.

Which one did you get a bid to? Did you go to bid day? (Where I go to school you can go to bid day even if you haven't accepted your bid)

I'm sorry that things didn't work out with you how you hoped they would. However, I am very glad that you realized this and didn't accept your big. Sadly, (I would venture to guess that) everyone on here knows of at least one girl who accepted a bid to a sorority that she didn't feel 100% comfortable with and was unhappy as a result.

True, KLPDaisy. However, I also know a lot of girls who accepted the bid to their not favorite house and ended up being excellent members. I have 3 that jump to mind immediately in my chapter.
Rumbly - Did you even go to bid day? I would encourage you to give it a shot for a few weeks if you can. Get to know your peldge sisters and see how the house acts in a less formal setting. If in a few weeks you still feel the same, then drop out, but you'll never know if you don't try. Of course, if you already declined then never mind, I guess.

Judging from her posts, this isn't a chapter she'd be happy with, and I wouldn't force it if she's that adamant. Yes, I do think people should give it a shot when they don't get their top choice, but if your mind is made up, that's that. It is a committment of time and money, and if you've already determined this isn't what you want, don't waste your time or the chapter's time.
I do think that recruitment is a big dog and pony show-- you have a limited number of visits to briefly meet the sororities and come to a mutual agreement while being entertained with skits and songs and some surface-level conversation with 4-6 women. But at schools with larger chapters, it does stand to reason that you can find a fit in any sorority-- it's not that hard to connect with a smaller group within a chapter of 100+. But you have to have met some of that group during your week at ABC House to maybe come to that conclusion on your own, esp. when you're in your late teens and caught up in the excitement and rush of sorority recruitment.
I'm starting to think that doing S.I.P. isn't a horrible thing -- if you can't see yourself anywhere else, and you'd rather not be in a sorority at all if you can't be an ABC, a woman should be able to choose only to put ABC on her bid card without fear of being kicked out of the matching system for reasons other than putting down only one choice.
Rumbly-- sorry it didn't work out. Good luck to you and have a great fall semester. I know you're disappointed right now, but this too shall pass. Take care and keep us posted on your school life!

I agree...I understand why panhellenic wants the girls to maximize their options, but doesn't it hurt the sorority she didn't accept a bid (or pref invite)from by taking a spot from a girl who might have wanted that sorority?
The thing that worries me when girls SIP is that they are not eligible for quota additions. That could really be the difference btx getting in your top choice, you could be in that +4 over quota!
There is not an easy answer...

I was one of those girls. However, there is a difference between getting a bid to your second choice which you still like and accepting it, and accepting a bid to a sorority which you didn't feel comfortable with just so you could still be in one.

Yes, it does. This is why it never works when PNMs are forced to put down all their choices on their card. If they really would't accept a bid from QQQ, then they shouldn't have to place them on their bid card. That is the decision these young women make and they are prepared for the consequences. While women that SIP are not eligible for quota additions, they may be eligible for snap bidding.

Yes, unless your school has had a problem w/ girls "playing" the system by suiciding and has to make rules against it.

At my school, girls were required to rank all four sororities. Of course if you declined your bid, you were still eligible to open bid so that didn't really matter.

Yes, anyone who did not match during FR is eligible for COB.

I went to get my bid but I did not go to the house afterwards. I guess our spring recruitment is only for chapters that didn't make quota so if anybody knows University of Arizona's quota statistics for this year it would be nice to know.

Spring recruitment will be for any chapter that isn't at chapter total, as set by Panhellenic. Fall COB is usually used to fill quota OR to fill to total.
Regardless, you are ineligible for Spring Recruitment because you received a bid and didn't accept it. You will be eligible for recruitment again in August 2007. Until then, get involved on campus, keep up your grades and keep a positive attitude!

I don't think any of us would want to force you into joining a group you didn't like. My concern is that you signed your bid card (indicating that you would accept their invitation) and then did not even give it a chance.
