Love the new album! I've always liked the Dixie Chicks and I always will. I'm not a GW fan at all, but I do support our troops 100%. Someone said it earlier and I'm too lazy to find out who right now, but you can support your troops even if you don't like why/how they got there! The Dixie Chicks are just standing up for what they believe in. Just my thoughts on the matter.

They're right above Disney's High School Musical and American Idol Season 5: Encores.

You gotta be proud when your managers times your CD to sell against that kind of competition after having your PR firm make sure everyone knows you're "Politically controversial".

Actually, you do in the lovely state of Wisconsin and its' slightly less lovely neighbor Minnesota.

You know what that means - they'd better get Mickey Mouse and the American Idols out there with their anti-Bush statements.

And because the Beastie Boys have penises. Society still likes to put outspoken women in their place. I read an interesting editorial the other day where the writer compared the hate mail that female columnists get with that received by their male counterparts. By and large, the tone and tenor of the hate mail that women received was far more violent and personal and made many references to killing them/harming their families.

So yeah, I'm not all that surprised that the FBI was called because Natalie Maines received a death threat that detailed the hows, whens, and wheres of how she would be killed at a concert in Dallas. Fear is a powerful deterrent. I'm just glad that they weren't silenced.

And you have no proof of that at all.

There are a ton of controversial female entertainers that are not put in their place.

I love how this goes from "People against freedom of speech hate them" to "People against non-country music hate them" to "People against women hate them".

How many excuses can people find for them just plain sucking?

Have to give credits to the Dixie chicks PR machine. they put something out there and all the suckers started to generate the publicity for them. Don't you guys know anything about the music industry, the more controversial one is, the more recordsthey sell.

...and plenty of controversial males who get death threats and the like. It's not a gender thing or a courage thing.

What proof do I need when the band admitted in several interviews that they had to have the FBI at the show in Dallas to make sure that nothing happened?

Are there? Name them. Because all I can think of is the vehement reaction to women like the Chicks, to Hilary Clinton, to Maureen Dowd, and in some ways, to Ann Coulter, and countless women throughout history. Powerful men who express their opinions are respected. Powerful women who express their opinions are "bitches," "whores," or are told they'd better shut up and sing, or they'll be killed on X date in X arena at X time.

Maybe it went there in your mind, but it's a logical progression to me. People who are threatened by anything that goes against the norm usually have a laundry list of things they fear or are against. You can ignore the fact that there is a gendered aspect to the response the Chicks get, but it doesn't make it any less true.

If they suck, then say they suck. Don't say "Those bitches made me mad, and they deserve to die for what they said about the President." Make it plain and skip the hyperbole.

Now that's true, because they've opened up their progressive fan base immensely as a result of the press they've been doing lately. I actually don't agree with them calling their former fans "rednecks" and the like in their interviews, because I think there was probably a better way to show that they felt betrayed/alienated by their audience than to descend into childish name-calling. But folks on the left like nothing better than to feel like they're morally and intellectually superior to people on the right, and they're snapping up the CD/downloading it by the thousands.

Make me laugh and spit my juice on the computer screen why dont ya? This would make for a FANTASTIC quote of the day...

Though I TOTALLY understand what you're saying - it still strikes me as quite amusing.

Wow with the sweeping generalizations...

What about "powerful men" such as Martin Luther King, RFK and JFK? Or the ones who don't go public with the death threats or other threats they receive?

I applaud Natalie Maines for speaking out. Why can't some people respect her opinion? Just because people are speaking out against the war, doesn't mean that they are anti-Americans. Being an American is about using your 1st Amendment. Of course, there is a price to pay for using your 1st Amendment rights, but it is a free country y'all. We sould be lucky that we have free speech, because if we were in another country, and free speech were not allowed, they we would be killed for saying something.

I wanted to go see the Dixie Chicks in Memphis, but they cancelled and now the closest that they will play is Nashville. That sucks.
