I think most badges are never returned to the original owner.

But yes, we have a number of success stories of badges being returned to the original ownere as well as MANY stories of badges that have been rescued and returned to our museum as historical.

I've heard at least two stories of badges having gone missing or stolen in the '40s or '50s that were later returned to their rightful owners in the late '90s and early 2000s.

Mine was stolen 13 years ago. I guess I shouldn't give up hope.

Hope that it show up on ebay. That's pretty much the only way you'll ever find it again - assuming, of course, you had it engraved. Never give up hope.

Last year at an Ole Miss football game a Phi Kappa Psi badge was found from the 1960s. It was returned to the owner, he apparently hadn't seen it since then. The office I use to work in on campus was given the badge and we were lucky enough to contact the alumnus so he could pick it up.

I lost mine about 8 years ago, I have my great-grandmother's AOII badge from 1924, but I'm still hopeful mine will show up on Ebay or other sites one day.

This is probably an abnormal thing to do, but I'm really paranoid of being robbed or burglarized.

I don't keep my real jewelry, my badges, and my sentimental pieces in a regular jewelry box on top of a dresser or vanity.

I keep those in a jewelry roll-up bag or box (for earrings & rings) and have it hidden in my apartment. While it is still possible for thieves to find it, it's not as obvious so if they are in a hurry the chances that they find it are slimmer.

The most common way to steal in the last year has been to head straight for the jewelry box, grab a handful, and leave before anyone is the wiser and it could be months before anyone is missing. I had a theft where they stole several outfits (can you imagine that they tried them on first? YUK!!), but left most my clothes & shoes (was I not their size?). They stole most of the real jewelry, but left everything junky in the jewelry drawer as well as everything like our DVD players, etc.

Theives are becoming more aware of the risks and choose what to steal accordingly....
This is why I keep a locked box and hide it somewhere. It may be convenient to keep it on the dresser, but I know it's fairly safe hidden somewhere else in the room and it's become routine for me to get into it from its hidden spot.

That's not so abnormal. Mine is kept in a similar way. Everyday (Cheap) stuff is in my jewellry box. THe good stuff that I don't wear much is hidden ina roll thing my mom got me years ago. She keeps hers the same way.

I like the "hide in plain sight rule". In the late 1990s, I got robbed. My sorority pins were on a felt board on top of dresser near jewelry box. They were still there when I got home. First clue to the police, theif did not go to college. They must have thought I was a snob but turns out I was right. Crackhead Bob was a High School drop out looking for drug $ (he worked for daddy's architecture business and walked the neighborhood at lunchtime looking for drug $). . He got caught selling my stuff at a jewelry store. Too bad for me that daddy kept him out of jail. Long story short, I got back my other gold jewelry six months later after the case was closed.

Delta Zeta reimburses up to $50.00 for resuced badges. I've rescued quite a few and donated the money to the Delta Zeta Foundation.

AOII badges are the property of the fraternity and are to be returned to headquarters upon the death of the member.

An article, with pictures, about the return of a long-lost badge is here on a Battle Creek paper's site:
